Soft melodrama with shining moments
I watched this when I was younger and the Silence song still sticks with me today. It has all of the typical tropes of childhood friends, missed meetings, misunderstandings, cancer that were popular in dramas of the time but the story wasn't weighed down by them and ofc the leads were absolute eye candy.
I found this after Park Eun Hye's Jewel in the Palace and was thrilled to see her not only in starring in a main role but in a CHINESE drama so of course I had to watch, meanwhile Vic Zhou was very young and very handsome back then. The second ML ended up being kinda annoying because he was so loud and brash all the time, but thankfully even he mellowed out by the end and had the ML and FL had their (short) happy times together.
It was also around this time that some cdramas started using English songs for stuff (100% Senorita is another one) and Josh Groban's "Try to Remember" really stuck with me as the couple song the ML and FL used to listen together on earphones...you know, back when all of them were wired so you had to sit side by side to share an earpiece. Ahhhh I cried so much at the sad scenes.
The most fun bit of this drama I think is also the "star sign" that ML and FL made up to talk about keeping connected with each other. Ending it with the FL on the beach making that sign towards the sky to the deceased ML was both pretty and tragic and beautiful and it still stays with me years after the series ended. Overall a cute series with great chemistry, average frustration (of course the ML's parents object to the match and there's another girlfriend in there), and all right plot!
I also thought it was genius they made Park Eun Hye's character mute cause that just sidestepped all the lip-sync matching issues she would've had speaking Korean for her lines!
