Very good points! The fact that we are debating so much about MX is proof that this character was well written.…
I feel the same! Honestly in terms of political intrigue and even romance it’s slim pickings in this drama , but boy do these characters have me hooked and I dont even like half of them lol
It’s a bit mind trippy to be honest! What Jedi mind tricks are these?!
I don’t like MX not because of how she’s treating CWD but because she seems capable of betraying anybody.…
I don’t think CWD is morally bound either lol
He has married a girl against her will, and let’s be honest, he’s pretty much committed assault on her a few times.
I love him as a character, but honestly his faults are no secret.
Also, IS he really doing the right thing? I would argue that the *way* he does things is true to his character: straightforward and honestly not always bright -but with all the best intentions and likely the worst method of execution.
The war is a great example. You see a powerful enemy who the emperor trusts and you deliberately indicate you are going against him despite his efforts to placate you (we’ll recall Wu tried to marry FY to CWD to get him on side). The first thought that comes to mind is: really? You couldn’t save a few lives of your men by PRETENDING for a bit first?
But ultimately that makes sense too right? He was raised by soldiers, and political strategy doesn’t seem to have been in the curriculum -and neither was how to treat young ladies to woo them either (smh)
I personally don’t think it’s fair to compare MX to hitler lol. But anyway, everyone experiences the show differently and this is part of the fun! I’ve enjoyed reading your take on this
I find all the comments here so interesting to read and wanted to throw my thoughts into the void about MX (copied and pasted from a longer thread).
I know MX frustrates a lot of us with her less than scrupulous ways with CWD, and blatant terrible decision making (FY, WJG, anything).
But not sure about you guys, when I was 17 I made a lot of questionable decisions and was in hindsight, selfish in all sorts of ways.
For MX who has had to look out for herself since she was a child, doing everything to keep one’s self alive would just come naturally. Being an advocate for her own needs was her only way to survive and all she knows.
Honestly, I think it’s a terribly realistic portray of someone who came from nothing, received little, and can lean on almost no one, who has never had much of a kind word from anyone other than her mother and FY.
I honestly doubt anyone would turn out that differently. I know a few people irl who grew up with varying hardships and those traits pop up across many of them. They’re not bad people, but you only know what you know. And most 17 year olds know very little.
I think it’s natural. Not all heroines are “heroes” and I think MX’s completely flawed character was masterfully put together.
We don’t have to like her, but no one can fault her resilience. Dead mother, neglected upbringing, aunt and uncle who dismiss her, cousin that try to prostitute her, war times, gained a lover, lost him, got him back, lost him again, nearly killed multiple times, kidnapped, forced into marriage, war times again…
Really? Nothing to admire there? I don’t think so. She’s no moral compass, but MX sure shows people how one survives -which is what she mentioned in ep1. She herself says she isn’t the typical heroine, and she really isn’t.

I don’t know that this is a fair representation of MX.

Like drinking a cold glass of water on a boiling day!
Loved the MX and CWD interactions. We also get to see why CWD has so many rough edges. He was essentially raised by military men. He’ll never be the quiet, well spoken, sweet talker that WJG is.
But he’s obviously loyal to a fault, and honest in everything he says or does.
CWD table manners are hilariously similar to my husband (except mine hid that from me until it was too late for me to escape) so I totally empathise with MX’s horror. Till this day, his eating “ASMR” still drives me crazy.
To be fair though, MX eats terrifyingly too. Like seriously, meals aren’t meant to be slurping concerts!
I admit to me, the actor who play main male lead in this drama is not someone that I call handsome but he is sooo…
Oh he is very much my type! 😍 I actually originally looked forward to him shaving but his beard has since grown on me. I prefer this style to the typical “pretty boy” look common in cdramas
Thankful for all the comments here about the last few eps because I couldn’t bear to watch it. Gonna dive back in when the separation occurs because this whole WJG obsession of MX’s (despite the perfection that is CWD) is driving me nuts. 😭
But good job on the actors in getting us this invested that we’re all still (kinda) watching despite how much we hate the progression of the story lol
So after watching the trailer for ep28, looks like this whole MX x WJG thing is going to keep going still…
There’s only 37 eps right? So 3/4 of this has been about WJG, yet most of us are rooting for CWD (or at the very least most of us think WJG is an ass). Seems like unsatisfactory story planning.
I like the overall story but I’m starting to feel a bit cheated 🥺

But we all know he couldn’t help trolling her
Gonna restart after tonight’s episode, but for now the frustration is too much for me lol.

I thought MX was done wth the whole WJG debacle but guess not. If this WJG stuff continues beyond the next 2 eps, imma pause until the series is done
But, on the bright side, WY has woken up and is now giving love struck psycho vibes.
I find that I love CWD, I find WY weirdly funny, but I hate WJG.
Need the next 2 eps to quickly separate WJG from MX once and for all
