Well done for finishing it, I bombed out around the same time as you and for the same reasons. although I do admit to skipping through the last ep to find out who made it.
Well it sure shows MNet were pissed off that Zhang Hao won it in the end (and by a 100K vote) Good job Zhang Hao! They barely showed his face on the final shots of the top 9 and lingered 3 times longer on Han Bin (Good job to you too). Then if you look at Soompi (owned by Viki the streaming platform), https://www.soompi.com/article/1581495wpp/update-boys-planet-announces-top-9-trainees-to-debut-as-new-boy-group-zerobaseone Zhang Hao's face isn't even visible he's bent over the mike, whereas Han Bin's is almost full on. Well done global voters for kicking their manipulated super-plan in the balls.
Was thinking of writing a review but you pretty much said a lot of what I was thinking too. Thanks! I too thought the judges were good on this show. Compared to Kingdom (which was a similar showcase during COVID) you can definitely see the budget constraints. Also, the manipulation became apparent with Venner, who I think did have an agency and have toured before, when they made them out to be raw from the streets and just had someone's mum meet them in the final episode rather than their professional backers. (Please someone correct me if this is wrong) I also thought the handling of the Team 24 situation very odd. What if those guys had won? The prize would be inappropriate wouldn't it?
Hi, thanks for your thoughtful analysis and for reading my review and taking time to comment on it. I do agree with much of what you said, but I think where we differ is that I didn’t think the drama had enough direction. My experience (particularly during the middle section) was that I felt a little lost and confused about what the author was trying to say and elucidate.
My comments about Park Hae Young were particularly relevant to your comments, as I don’t think that there was enough depth written into the characters in Attorney Shin for them to really carry the weight being placed on them. The structure of the plot needs to provide support for both the characters and the ideas being presented, and here the structure imo was lacking. I really enjoyed the performances and writing for the central characters in particular but the focus with them was loyalty, support and friendship not aspects of divorce.
I too enjoyed the more realistic, less trope aspects of this drama and my favourite dramas all have a lot of realism in them. It’s always possible that when I watched this drama I asked things of it that it was not designed or intended to give and that if I were to rewatch it (unlikely) my opinion might change. But overall, first time round it didn’t quite hit the spot for me.
I agree with you that she is a good writer and will definitely watch more of her work when it comes out. Of the three that I have seen, (Encounter, Thirty Nine and Attorney Shin) what strikes me most is how different they are. She is obviously someone who likes to explore new ways of presenting ideas and that can only be good in my book.
Actually reading your review has saved me the trouble of watching ep 30!!! Can I just give you a quick tip based on my observation - when you post your review, if you add an extra blank line between paragraphs the text doesn't look quite so dense and is more inviting to read.
Well put. I was somewhat less measured in my review. I simply couldn't suspend enough belief! But you brought out some nice points about the relationships.
I think we're in agree to differ territory :-) It didn't do it for me. But I can see that the romance might be cute for people. I much preferred "First Love: Hatsukoi" although that one is not a noona romance. This one needs another review to balance out mine, as you liked it, why not write one...
Yes agreed, there were more weaknesses to be explored (note I said MAIN weaknesses) btb honest there are a ton of reviews that probably discuss them, so this is just because I felt compelled to write something. It had such an epic feel about it that it swept you along and a heroic grandeur of Ben Hur proportions you can't just pass on without comment.
