Excellent Actors, poor production
The cast is excellent. I genuinely enjoyed both Zhang Linghe and Wang Churan, and I don't think the shortcomings of this drama reflect their performances.Unfortunately, the drama itself didn't live up to the expectations set by the clips circulating on Instagram and TikTok. I was expecting something grand, cinematic, and emotionally gripping. Instead, I found the story unnecessarily heavy, with the male lead enduring relentless suffering in almost every episode. Rather than feeling invested, it became emotionally exhausting.
I also struggled with the female lead's characterization. Instead of rooting for the romance, there were many moments where I questioned whether I even wanted the leads to end up together.
The production choices didn't help either. The editing often felt disjointed, the music cues were awkwardly placed, and some of the camera angles were distracting rather than immersive, pulling me out of scenes that should have carried emotional weight.
That said, I do appreciate that the production team updated the opening sequence—it is a definite improvement. I only wish that level of care had been there from the beginning, rather than after the backlash.
I genuinely hope the director takes the audience's feedback on board. There is clearly a talented cast and a promising premise here, and I'd love to see those strengths matched by stronger storytelling and execution in future projects.

I found out that I love Republican Drama!
I stumbled upon this drama after several people told me that the reason I didn't enjoy Overdo was because Republican-era dramas simply weren't my genre.Well... this completely proved me wrong.
I absolutely loved it.
The story is engaging from the very beginning, with excellent pacing that introduces the world naturally without overwhelming you with too many characters or names in the first few episodes. The script strikes a wonderful balance between angst, romance, comedy, and conflict, so none of the elements ever overstays its welcome.
I also appreciated how grounded the production feels. The dialogue is natural, the cinematography avoids excessive zoom-ins, overdramatic music, or the telenovela-style editing that often pulls me out of the story. Instead, it lets the characters and emotions speak for themselves.
The character development is fantastic, and the cast delivers wonderful performances across the board. ❤️❤️
I'm so glad I gave this drama a chance—it reminded me that it's never the genre itself, but the quality of the storytelling that makes all the difference.

A love story without much mentioning of love
I stumbled across this drama completely by accident. It appeared in my Netflix recommendations.I normally watch Western series and Japanese dramas because I've often found C-dramas a little too long and overly complicated. But after the very first episode, I was captivated.
The cinematography is breathtaking, and the storytelling draws you effortlessly into the rustic beauty of Lin'an—a town that feels less like a setting and more like the heart of the entire story.
At first glance, the plot centres on a marriage of convenience, a familiar trope in historical romance. But what makes Pursuit of Jade so refreshing is the reason behind it. This isn't a marriage for power, status, or wealth. It's born out of necessity: to give the male lead a place to hide under a legal identity, and to help the female lead keep the only home her late father left behind.
From there begins the journey of two orphans from completely different worlds, learning to face hardship side by side.
What moved me most was how quickly they understood one another—not because of romance, but because they recognised the same loneliness. They both knew what it meant to lose their parents and to face the world with no one to rely on. Their relationship didn't begin with attraction. It began with empathy. Then respect. Then quiet acts of care that slowly grew into love.
I once came across a relationship counsellor on Instagram who said that many people are drawn to Pursuit of Jade because it portrays "a perfect love in an imperfect world." I couldn't agree more.
The drama reminds us that hardship doesn't always tear people apart—it can draw them closer. That love doesn't always need grand confessions that involve epic moments. Sometimes it is found in a bowl of hot soup, medicine that was bought with one's entire savings, sharing candy sweetness, tending each other's wounds, or simply choosing, every single day, to stay.
Pursuit of Jade is the only drama I've ever rewatched more than two times from beginning to end, and somehow it never loses its magic. Every tense moment still makes my heart race. Every heartbreak still brings tears to my eyes. Every quiet, tender scene still leaves me smiling.
It's more than just an excellent drama.
It's a masterpiece.

On top of that, Wang Churan and Cheng Lei are absolutely delightful to watch. Their performances feel natural, engaging, and their comedic timing is spot on.
After being disappointed by Overdo (which, to be clear, wasn't the actors' fault), I'm so glad I stumbled upon this hidden gem. Hopefully it keeps up this momentum!
