I am currently watching this drama. From my understanding Empress and the late Emperor has no feelings for each other they were married for sake of saving the imperial family of han. She just respect him and she wants to take revenge on cao family that why she married him. But she fell in love with the current emperor because of his care for her.

From the synopsis it sounds like dark theme
