some good plot twists here and there but ultimately failed to impress me

after having finished 33 episodes, I’m glad to see it over soon. what an emotionally draining show was this. with each episode that passed, I wondered “who is going to die next?” I know it’s a story about sacrifice, but you can only do so many deaths until it loses all its impact. was it useful to the story? most of the times yes, other times no. if it didn’t happen so frequently, I would have cared maybe a little bit more. but at a certain point, I just couldn’t be bothered anymore. the only one whom I shed tears for so far was the old turtle. and I’m guessing our dear second lead couple will be next in line.

romance: the romance between the leads couldn’t be more mechanical and flat than the love between Bai Lu and Ao Rui Peng. I just couldn’t care less about this couple. largely because of the actress bai lu who seems to portray her characters in a way that feels very one dimensional, monotone and flat. I cannot seem to understand the hype around her when compared to other actresses such as Zhao Lusi and Esther Yu, who are much better at portraying different kinds of emotions in one scene, no matter how subtle. In terms of performance, although a veteran, can definitely learn a thing or two from some of her juniors.

the show is definitely one of stunning visuals, costumes and great cgi, which largely makes for its popularity together with the names of the actors. but unfortunately it is not one of stellar performances and great storyline, apart from some well thought of plot twists here and there. a show that is not terrible, but def not memorable either.
