They are nitpicking the errors because they need to establish a "true highest scorer" because the culture doesn't allow for multiple top scorers. With parents wanting a clear answer that their kid is the best, this opens the door for parents to 1) nitpick the question answers to find the actual "top" and 2) question the teachers ability to teach at a level that is challenging. meanwhile sour face is proud the kids understood the material, which is what a teacher is supposed to do. The grading scene can be taken as though the test question was how to build a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, with one student answering spread PB on one slice first, another preferring jelly first, and the teacher trying to be non-subjective but taking points off not describing opening the jars.
