He didn't do it to let her kill herself but to gaurd against Yan Lin and others. It's not explained in drama how Xie Wei felt about her in past life, but it's obvious from his expressions when she suicided that he had some feelings for her.

In the drama, he doesn't have the past memories. It's in book only.
