As someone who loves Tang&Song Dynasty literature, I absolutely adore this show. When I watched the first four eps, I was blown away by its amazingness. I mean, look at the directing, lighting, costumes, dialogues, cast, and storyline, there is no way this would be a bad drama unless writers somewhat screw this in the middle (which luckily still survive till ep 18).
I then recommended this to my mom, who has no knowledge on Chinese historical matters, she just slept on it haha. Unlike Nirvana in Fire (my mom’s fav and same production team) which appeals to almost everyone with its dramatical and fiery revenge schemes, this is much more slow pace that can’t be devour but savour instead.
Also, with its wrong impression posters, this is actually not your usual romance drama where you can expect male lead to be some “prince on white horse who has no flaws and only loves female lead” like the second male lead is here. This show is more of a family stories with a focus on female lead’s growth.
For all those who shipping with second male lead, yeah he is looking good and sincere but I don't want ming lan…
Exactly. Second male lead is indeed very handsome, but his background has made him unable to see whats there need to be seen. He is very selfish&forceful, thinking that if the female lead likes him, then he can use the power of love to turn around everthing. The truth is, even female lead married him, their love will wither with all the schemings happening in the inner house. There is no way female lead can handle his household matter easily. Even someone as wise as her big sister is, has to suffer in a big shot official household.
Also, the female lead has to take the blame here too because she definitely knows there is no way she could get married to him as first wife, yet she is leading him with wrong signal and giving him hope.
I absolutely ship first male lead with her. Yes, he has an unpleasant past, has two children, and owns several women, but thats very normal thing in that era for someone from higher up official household. Once in a while, it’s great to see a male lead who is full of flaws like him instead of the usual dreamy romantic prince on the white horse character like the second male lead. Setting aside, I think there are enough scenes so far (im on ep 18) that proves he is a very nice and capable person.
Also yall, dont worry on the mistress too much, seeing her behaviours i can tell with her low IQ she will be down in no time. Also, there is no way someone like her can beat our female lead lmao
