I think Shin Woo feels more comfortable expressing himself through text and acts of kindness. That is how he shows his love. He said himself that he did not care if Tae ever saw the messages. He just wants to take care of him.

I don't think Shin Woo's first love was Tae. As people mentioned he was in middle school when he gave a bracelet to the boy he liked. He met Tae in highschool and Tae does not even know him at the time . I doubt he would wear a bracelet he recieved from someone he does not know.
Also the reason why he goes to a school which is 40 minutes away from his home is probably because he was bullied in middle school. So I doubt Tae and Shin Woo went to the same middle school either.

I also would like to point out that the bullies in ep 3 probably knew the boy Shin Woo had a crush on in middle school. They did not seem to recongize Tae so Tae was not his first crush. Tae is the person who made Shin Woo open his heart again.

There is progress, in ep 12 they had lots of moments together but I would recommend that you watch for yourself and see where the story goes.
