Just a note, the joy of life background twist is from the novel, what the drama added was the first 5 minutes of the drama, where ML is working on a thesis and they literally spell out the theme of the story.

the head scriptwriter was contracted to write several scripts for another company, big adaptation ip ones (joy of life, douluo continent and sword snow stride) so there's no sign of season two yet. three of the six cast member went on and had pretty well recieved dramas this year, so it'd be harder to get them back for schedule reason too mhmm.

Gank your heart's game in the book is league of legends, in the drama, it's mix of LOL and DoTA. It's the same type of games, but those are played on pc, while this one is on mobile, and technically take shorter time + bit easier. The game exist for international audience too I think. The Chinese version is also called Honor of Kings, while the international version is called Arena of Valor

they actually gained members? *squints* Q2's stats were not pretty. I didn't know about the cheaper pricing model for rural areas, that's kind of neat. iirc, tencent's monthly visitor is 550mil-ish, when subbers are like 125mil, that's pretty rough.

tencent didn't have crime crack fast track i think, I watched you are my glory though and that had fast track in selected south east asian countries iirc.

People were pissed when fast track was broadly implemented late '19, Joy of Life got bunch of boycotters for it, but then all the episodes leaked before they finished fast track so that was FUN. With latest serious clean up, people reporting these kind of issues or just scream about it a lot on social media would definitely draw attention.

I've been following stats for most dramas this year so yeah I know they are desperate to minimise losses. What with hit against short form platforms like douyin, and early vip (poor imperial coroner got partially vip'ed before it could finish its non-vip run, and tencent had so little expectation for the drama that there were no fast track option at the beginning, they put it in last minute), I think they are all still losing members, higher prices will just lose them more members lol.

no, they charged for it, it's just iqiyi have a vvip option too (which gives you access to all fast track episodes + tv access). People are unhappy with fast track and they've been screaming about it (mostly at tencent and crime crackdown, since they thought tencent doesn't have fast track oversea), so I did see states media calling it out, I think now you can buy fast track episodes out of order instead in order? lol?

oh yeah it's basically 99% sure it got pulled from tv, but idk if it'd still air as webdrama, rip you had to deal with their toxic fans. I'm curious about the other two you have in mind though, maybe in PM? lol

It's doing less well than expected, but this is technically half the story. The modern portion is also the one that's tote around when they asked for sponsors, so I'd wait till that airs and see how it goes, a lot of people are held back by the ending of this one.

the platforms are concentrating on getting more subscribers and making money, it's why fast track is an option for essentially all reasonable size dramas. They've been experimenting with the non vip schedule to maximise people's chances to subscribe too. Tencent usually vip dramas about a day after, but it varies, I watched Imperial coroner get vip BEFORE it ended for non-vip. iqiyi's used to be 2 weeks, but this year they keep viping early. Lately (last 3 months) they've been viping a day after too, so all the view counts got slashed too.

They've also been more into producing dramas, they did it before, but now it's much more prevalent, and they can get big stars + directors to do big projects that might be web dramas only too.

Drama views in general have been heavily affected by short form video site like douyin, it went online in 2016, but it mostly started affecting view counts right around when they stopped super inflating the views, so like 2019? 2019 had fair amount dramas that did really well, last year and this year not so much.

Its monthly visitor is about 550mil to just under 600mil (right now). Note that that's one platform, there's three major platforms, and few years back, youku was on par with tencent in terms of monthly visitors. Dramas back then also tend to air on tv + all three platforms + no fast track + more time for non vip to watch the dramas, so even if there's overlap amongst viewers across platform, that's a billion viewers. iirc, china have about 4 or 5 billion internet users last time I checked, so it's not that outrageous. Anyways, you could inflate the view counts much easier too ;P It's not too difficult to get 10 billion though, essentially for historical dramas that are like 60 ep long, but it's not during its broadcast time usually.

lol, the list is not a rec list. I've only watched YAMH out of them, although they all did pretty well in the domestic market. I guess stuff I would rec don't necessarily do that well mhm.

Cursory search for subscribers for tencent video, looks like 125million members. I'd note that a lot of people stream dramas without subscribing, and due to cost of buying dramas, tencent video like iqiyi and youku are all in the reds, and they have been for last several years.

Veteran actors aren't actually that expensive, although i don't have actual numbers. I also got the impression neither Sun Honglei or Zhang Yixing are super expensive, but idk why I have that impression.

I only know dramas' cost if they disclose financial statements or seasonal/yearly reports because they are on the stock market. The closest comparison (modern, have fair amount of action, big-ish projects) I can think of would be You Are My Hero's 120million yuan from the biggest investor (I think estimate would be about 160 in total) for 40 episodes. My Dear Guardian is 200million for 40 episodes. The Penalty Zone is 180million for 44 episodes. So my wild guess would be 120million-ish (upwards to about 140 or 150 due to reshoots) for 28 episodes.

CC does have real life basis but they aren't specific enough for most drama viewers to know from the get go, it's more generalised corrupted police officers + local government etc. I'm not in love with it honestly, but it's interesting to look at its stats LOL

There are plenty of other cdramas that might be of interest, you watched remembrance of things past which I really liked, I'm starting couple of mirrors and stealth walker. Oh candle in the tomb worm valley is starting tomorrow, but mhmmmm not sure if that genre is your thing (tomb raiding/adventure?)

Haven't seen any financial statements so no, I'm guessing lower than YAMG though.
