Editorials
If you're looking for deep themes or a rigorous plot, you can basically skip this one. But as a casual "comfort watch," it's actually pretty decent.
Major spoilers ahead!
First, the cons: Some plots are quite cliché and forced (like the misunderstanding at the start, Lu Ming's death, the breakup later, the reconciliation with the mom). Some lines are cheesy and awkward (e.g., "How do I make you happy?", "Look again and I'll eat you"). Many details don't hold up to scrutiny (why wouldn't the FL just explain clearly when delivering the letter? Why sit in the rain just because she couldn't find him?). There are random slow-mo physical touches that feel out of place. And the editing is a mess!
Now for the pros: I really liked the female-centric topics- three generations of female pilots supporting and passing the torch; the gender bias and double standards Ruan Sixian faces becoming a pilot; Jiang Ziyue's awakening from her family's exploitation and emotional gaslighting; Zheng Youan's status as an "appendage" in marriage and the inheritance bias (thinking her dad was picking a son-in-law to be her heir); plus the sisterhood between the three besties, Captain Fan Lei, and others. Although some points were touched on lightly without going too deep, at least they acknowledged women's struggles and showed female power.
The setting: In most idol romcoms, the workplace is just a backdrop for the love story. Regular shows usually have unrealistic workplaces where they get the FL to do a wrong or multiple wrongs, and make her growth depend on her relationship.
But Blossom Through the Cloud actually makes the aviation career and the romance two separate but equally important storylines.
FL- Ruan Sixian is wronged, but she wasn't waiting around for someone to notice her - she quits her job, trains, becomes the top pilot, and gets all the airlines fighting for her - and all this happens before she even runs into Fu Mingyu again. No explanations, no complaints, no waiting for an apology and her comeback wasn't for any of those either - it was about becoming stronger again, on her own, and to reach her goal of becoming a captain and her dream of flyingin the sky. The growth happens through her own efforts, separate from the romance. She gets stronger first, and only then does she have a real shot at a fresh start. What makes Ruan Sixian's story so touching isn't that she ended up as a captain - it's that when the whole world was against her, she chose the toughest path turning herself into a light that couldn't be ignored.
She is firm and resilient about her dreams, highly self-driven, clear-headed, independent, and dignified. Even though there's a social status gap in their relationship, she maintains equality, voices her dissatisfaction, actively maintains the bond, trusts fully, and loves honestly and freely.
The ML is bold and innovative in his career.
In love, he confronts his feelings, makes the first move, reflects, apologizes proactively, and clears up misunderstandings immediately. They respect each other and don't demand changes.
Regarding their relationship, there are a lot of comments about the FL not reciprocating MLs' love equally. We often notice Fu Mingyu's grand gestures and deep affection later in the story while she seems to struggle to do anything like that for him. But she does! She hugs him, loves him, kisses him and doesn't push him away when he comes to her or caresses her (there are many 💋 btw 😉). There is love in their banter. She even cooks for him (well, tried 🤣). But yes she doesn't buy him gifts and stuff. Her love goes beyond this. She protects his professional integrity (when faced with unfair assessments she refuses his offer to intervene with captain Yue). She protects his self-respect, business, position and powers. The break-up would still mean she would get grounded and she will have to pass the retraining etc pushing her back but it would mean quite a lot and probably everything for Fu Mingyu and his position(shareholders/board elections were imminent) and his reforms.
Looking deeper into her backstory reveals that her attitude isn't unprovoked—it is a deeply rooted defense mechanism driven by self-preservation and protecting her professional dignity. She compensates for her childhood lack of affection primarily through extreme professional ambition, fierce self-reliance, and emotional hyper-independence. Because of her childhood trauma, her romance with Fu Mingyu is intentionally slow-building. It requires Fu Mingyu to consistently show up as a silent, unwavering beam of light and support before her childhood defense mechanisms begin to safely dismantle, allowing her to balance her fierce ambition with genuine emotional intimacy. Ultimately, she stops running away from her emotional wounds when she learns to accept a healthy, supportive partnership with Fu Mingyu. It would be unrealistic if she is shown to fall easily in love considering her childhood. Their chemistry was good I thought.
The supporting characters are also well-portrayed: the Assistant Bai Yang 😂, Captain Fan Lei 🙌, Xiao Zhen, Bian Xuan, You'an, Yan'an, Ni Tong, Jiang Ziyue, Captain Yueyang 🤮, etc. I absolutely loved the Fu family 💞
Cinematography is simply superb!
OST is pleasing to the ears.
Overall, the show is light and fun.
Watch it for what it is- a stress free idol romcom-and you will enjoy.
Can't give anything less than 10 for Miles 😭🥰
Solid 9/10
