Posting the entire story in the comments without putting it as a spoiler is extremely upsetting and rather rude for those people. My favorite place in Japan is Nara. The deer being so docile [and addicted to rice crackers] made it feel so magical for me when I first experienced it.
A close second would be Miyajima Island off of Hiroshima. Strenuous but beautiful hike, along with deer just laying around made it really rewarding for me.
