Started off strong but disappointing til the end...
I was anticipating this show since BWS attained huge popularity with Lovely Runner acting alongside with IU with good hits under her belt. Aesthetically, they did do their diligence with the small details being such a high-profile drama. It had the perfect elements for another success and it does bring in the hype but fails to meet expectations. However, that being said, there are many cliché moments and classic tropes like marriage for convenience and I find it hard to relate to the characters.
IU's role was a borderline narcissistic elite CEO who almost appears rude, vain and degrades others at times like they are beneath her that its hard to garner empathy for her when she encounters problems in the palace because she placed herself in that position willingly. Her endless pursuit for prestige/class felt like a waste of time with how it ended. Was it just greed for her to want more when she was already at the top of her game? ML also did not shine in his role, he has a model demeanor and it feels like he is just FL's trophy husband who just happens to be good-looking with a royal title.
Don't get me wrong, this show does have ample opportunity but it just doesn't live up to it's hype. One cannot get past sometimes how shallow and superficial the show really is. Despite all of it's short-comings, it does garner in a solid fanbase and ratings just from the star power and an ambiance of grandiosity, marking off categories like top choreography and acting in these areas. Chemistry is 50/50 but it's there no doubt.
I am being critical of this show just because it brings with high expectation with a stellar case so I rate it 6.5/10. I will still recommend to watch it but go in with little expectations instead of a solid written script.
