There is a saying that Shakespeare used all the main story lines, and really the 19c womens authors created most…
To be fair. All the reboots of pride and prejudice, etc.. are not trying to be anything except pride and prejudice and that’s exactly what they’re calling it. You’re not changing a couple of characters and renaming it, claiming that it was an original script. They are outright saying that they are re-creating, pride and prejudice and following the script.
Now Bridgerton is an original script. Out of all the Jane Austen books it is not replicating it, it is using the same time period, dress, social status, etc. but NOT any of the storylines. Emma, sense and sensibility, pride and prejudice, persuasion and so on. Some have had a few renditions made but all under copywright and actually say it is a Jane Austen book.
I’ve seen a few versions of Wuthering heights. All staying true to the story and and all giving credit to Charlotte Brontë.
These movies that you mention do not claim to have “written” the script like MD is doing.
This show is great and I love it but it is a rip off of gone with the wind but it’s laughable to me that anyone believes this is an original script.

Thanks for your reply! I’m going to strongly disagree with you. Rhett is ML. Ashley IS 2nd ML. Scarlet is FL and Melanie is 2nd female lead. ALL with the Same. Exact. Personalities.
Do your remember the scene in GWTW where Scarlett comes on to Ashley and is caught by Rhett? GWTW.
These are all the main characters in GWTW:
- Rhett is a rake and doesn’t want to get married. He also has no allegiance to either side but helps out because of Scarlet. He sees Scarlett as immature and a challenge. Voila- our male lead in MD.
- Scarlet is a petulant little brat who thinks the world revolvers around her and stops at nothing to get Ashley. Voila- our FL in MD.
- Ashley is a quiet reserved quiet and educated man who is attracted to Scarlet but is deeply in love with Melanie. Voila - 2nd ML in MD.
- Melanie is quiet and demure, angelic. She loves Scarlet and is not upset at Scarlet’s actions. She humors her. Voila- 2nd FL in MD.
- Mammy is played by her loyal servant. Runs around after her worried about her reputation.
In GWTW scarlet DOES get married to a random soldier out jealousy and he dies in the war. In MD she gets engaged to another random guy and then he dies in the war. I guess that’s one small change. She didn’t actually get married. I guess Korean conservatism doesn’t like it.
All of this is hardly a reinterpretation. I mean come on. Who knows - perhaps they will start veer away from GWTW but anyone who says it’s not based on GWTW it is simply wrong.
I am really enjoying My Dearest. But does everyone here realize it is an exact replica of Gone with the Wind? As of last episode it has followed the GWTW storyline.
I love everything about the show, but I just don’t think that much credit should be given to the writer for ripping off a story from an American made movie called Gone with the Wind.
