What Zhan Zhao does, from beginning to end, is uphold procedural justice. How hard is that? In most costume fantasy dramas, the protagonist's response to injustice is usually, "Let me slaughter your whole family, and that's that." Yet Zhan Zhao—wounded again and again, hunted by so many—never loses faith that rules still carry warmth in a chaotic world. He insists on using the facts of a case and the law itself to punish evil, rather than resorting to the jianghu code of swift, personal revenge. What's most striking is that, even as the drama places him at the crossroads of court and martial world, the writers don't deliberately blur the boundary between law and emotion. Instead, they reveal a Zhan Zhao who continues to make principled judgments within the gaps of the system. This establishment knight-errant—full of inner conflict yet unyielding in his convictions—embodies something that contemporary audiences feel a painful lack of, and secretly yearn to see in themselves. When the creators speak of "returning Zhan Zhao to the jianghu," this is exactly what they mean: not to present a lofty, untouchable "Imperial Cat," but to shape a real person who wrestles with himself again and again between justice and private feeling.
