Visually stunning but messy and confusing
I watched 12 episodes before dropping this drama. The production, costume design, and fight scenes all look amazing but everything else just feels all over the place.
They threw in so many characters so fast that I kept asking myself wait who is this again? There is no real in dept development so it is hard to get attached to anyone. Gong Jun acting feels a bit stiff and disconnected at times. Truthfully I do not think he should get this strong ML role he might as well be better as a 2nd ML. Su Chang He does okay but doesn't leave a strong impression. His character is weird... Bai He Huai scene as the physician honestly lost me the part where she is using those needles and dramatically throwing them while trying to cure Geng Le just looked so unrealistic that I couldn't take it seriously.
On the other hand, I have to give credit to Peng Xiao Ran she really carried her role well. Even during the drama promotional interviews you could feel the emotion and sincerity she put into her character. It is just a shame the story and direction didn't match her energy.
Blood river has the looks but not the dept. It tries to be grand and complex but ends up feeling confusing and surface level. I wanted to love it but after 12 episodes I just couldn't stay invested. It got soooooo boring!!
