Promising start and disappointing execution
Undercover Us starts off sounding promising, but unfortunately goes downhill as the story progresses. The plot is filled with loopholes, and at times it is difficult to remember what is even happening. The concept of dual identities feels pointless when they aren’t hidden well or communicated clearly between characters. It also raises the question of why the leads are constantly written as opposing forces, with excessive bickering especially from the female lead which becomes tiring rather than engaging.
The romantic chemistry between the main leads is lacking making their relationship feel forced rather than natural. In contrast, the storyline between the female lead and the second male lead is more emotionally effective. Their backstory and how he falls in love with her feels genuine and you can actually feel the emotional weight in their interactions.
That said, both leads did a decent job during the heavier emotional moments, particularly in the divorce arc. Those scenes, including the female lead’s sacrifice were handled with more depth and sincerity compared to the rest of the drama.
Overall, this drama is worth watching if you are in it for the beautiful costumes, martial arts choreography, and OST. However, don’t go in with high expectations the storytelling is messy and the ending feels confusing and unsatisfying.
