Side note, Officer Lu (if you made it to the end) was such a great character. The suspense has me tipping on my ass. I wished he could have been involved earlier to the storyline

#3 one of the main reason of Shen yi joining the police department was because of “the lady he could not draw as he forgot” That was his nightmare. Don’t get me wrong, that’s a great ice breaker and sounds damn interesting. I buy that shit for a drama. But like it’s never really ever is resolved in the end. This is what I mean when the author left us yearning for clarification and to answer our own imagination with what they gave the audience. “it’s resolve but we won’t show you. Just know it happen.”
My take on it since it never cleared the air. Fake He Hong (the one that had plastic surgery to look like the real He Hong) was the lady that asked Shen yi to draw the portrait of Officer Lei from his child photo. Hence why she mention that she admire his drawing of her. (This recap was brought up multiple times). But like that shit didn’t matter anymore, literally in the middle to the end of the drama. (Like it was never brought up again in the end) It’s like why have such a great set-up to one of the many plots in the drama but leave it out in the end.

#2 I wished that there was more context to Officer Lei and Shen yi’s teacher Xu. They both were lovable characters who were the driving force behind the 2 MCs of this drama. Screenwriters could have done so by adding more scenes/information about Officer Lei working in solving the case (human trafficking) that cause him to get killed. (Like how far was he into solving it. What was him role in faking his identity to be undercover in the case) I swear 2-4 more episodes would have been fine to provide more context. Like screenwriters just told us that in beginning and that’s it. But when Officer Lei’s scenes came up, it was so heartwarming but the audience could not build that connection with him. You can’t help but just wish to learn and know a little more about him.
As for Teacher Xu, they could have gone in a little deeper with his relationship to Shen yi’s past (even teenage or college years) . OR even better, let them meet again/talk when Shen yi now works as a police officer. Just let them have their closure. Like right when they introduce him, BAM he died. I went from balling my eyes to WTF (y’all give me more please)

The core storyline and cases were interesting and relatable to our human nature, emotion, thoughts, values, beliefs, etc. The main reason it was not a perfect 10 was that #1 the plots left me yearning for more clarification. Like I said the cases and storyline was great and executed pretty well but at the end of each plot, the screenwriters elude us to ending without clarifying or showing what happen/end result of the victims and perpetrators of each case. It’s kinda like “we are not going to show what happen but you can figure it out/imagined/guessed what happen in the end.” Like you build and invest in a connection and emotional tie with the people involve in each case just for the screenwriter to tell us issue was resolved and move on to the next case. There was no closure to how each case end for the involving characters. For example, like what happen to my girl (tomboy teen in high school) involve in the suicide case (teen girl body found at the high school). It end with her unveiling what happened and why she never told no one. And that’s it. Like the story just moved on after the MCs solved the case.

It was a great drama. Don’t hesitate to watch please. The core characters and the actors played great in building the chemistry. My personal rating would be 9/10. I’ll will explain why it doesn’t get a full 10 below. Eye out for spoiler below

I tried so hard to like it since apparently it’s being well received in other places, but for some reason I…
It’s just not your cup of tea as you are not keeping up with the storyline, clues, and characters. It slowly builds on top of one another while solely showing an insight to all the characters personal life and challenges.

This is trash
A lot of people want this drama to work either because they like a particular cast, waited for a long time, like xian-xia, etc. but ignore the lack in quality (wether it is production, acting, storyline, pacing, etc) Some are willing to put up with a drama for the sake of liking an actor or actress. I on the other watch way too many dramas to let particular problems slide. I’d rather be honest reviewing than glorifying something because I bias/like/favor someone.

where is it?
I should also note that the Donghua does not solely focus on their love story. There are other important plots and characters rather to the love between the leads. Na Sheng is an important role in the Donghua but she is kinda downgraded as a side character in this drama

where is it?
You can watch it side by side especially since the live action is a slow burner. I think the Donghua version will provide more context to the live action (with the base storyline and different power set ups) Each episode of the animated version is about 15 minutes long (that’s with the open and ending songs)

Season 2 is here (website maybe a little glitchy but doable)
https://youtu.be/Ftk5FYphGI8
(Also season 2, subtitles can sometimes be a little confusing but you will still understand it)
Season 1 you can find it on YouTube but it’s easier to google it so you have all 4 episodes together.
On an end note, if you understand Mandarin, then you are good to go without any subtitles.

where is it?
It’s on YouTube (mirror twin cities) but you have to add Donghua to the end of it or the drama version will pop up. Season 1 has only 4 episodes that’s are fully English sub. Season 2 is partly sub and can be a little bit difficult to find with subtitles on YouTube.

If y’all are struggling with the pacing and storyline of the drama, I recommend watching the Donghua version instead. I feel the live action version is struggling to deliver the story and relationships. The cgi and green screen can be a struggle but I have seen worse in Chinese dramaland. However it’s a struggle with any xian-xia dramas.

I recommend watching the Donghua version, the pacing is easier to understand and art is absolutely gorgeous. Idk why the live action version can’t compared to the animated version. I think it’s all the cgi and green screen that’s feels out of place

I currently watching the Donghua/anime version, which in my opinion is so much better compared to the live action. She was saved by a goddess however she is considered dead. According to the Donghua, only her soul/spirit is alive and can’t be in direct sunlight as it will cause her soul to disappear. Sumo practice the art of bring the dead back to life (he controls a puppet) but there is a catch, the practice can backfire and in a result the puppet (which is filled with hatred) can control him.
