I disagree that it wasn't obvious before then. when he grabbed two drinks (one being the exact drink that she liked) he was obviously too nervous and played it off like he intended to take the drink home with him. Always looking out for her with the boss. shutting off the light when she was napping in the chair, making her coffee. it was all there but very subtle.

OK, I'm glad I wasn't the only one that found the opening scene to be weird with only footsteps and no ambience or music.
