Let me preface this by mentioning that I personally rated this a 9 on enjoyment alone, but I should quickly address it critically while it's still fresh in my mind.
Pros:
- Great romance (chemistry, skinship A+)
- Great performances from lead roles
- Many memorable moments
Cons:
- Secondary characters are lackluster
- OST
Story:
The story harbors many common clichés, but it is executed well. If you are looking for something completely innovative, you are not likely to find it in this drama. With that said, the crux of a great story is not simply innovation. A great story can seem fresh even when it isn't, and You Who Came From the Stars does an excellent job of making an impact through execution alone.
I will touch on what I felt were the primary weaknesses in the story before I move on:
- The secondary characters, primarily Park Hae Jin and Yoo In Na, suffer from secondary lead syndrome - they are written to push certain aspects of the plot along, but outside of that they are two-dimensional and cliché.
- This drama featured some slight pacing issues in the last couple of episodes. The conflict resolution and conclusion of the drama felt slightly clunky, but it wasn't as pronounced as some other dramas that have had an extension.
Acting:
This drama is carried by some powerhouse performances. Jun Ji Hyun and Kim Soo Hyun may have already solidified the best couple of 2014 and it's not even March yet. The chemistry is sizzling - the absolute best on-screen chemistry I have seen in a Korean Drama since Queen in-Hyun's Man. Romance fans should take note of this series, the passion leaves absolutely nothing to be desired. The skinship between the two leads is natural and electric.
Shin Sung Rok plays an excellent villain. He's both charismatic and unnerving allowing him to effectively steal scenes. If you're a fan of great villains, this drama features an exceptional one.
The only real weakness lies with the secondary characters again. Much of it lies with the script, but several of the secondary performances fell flat - especially Yoo In Na. I'm a fan of hers, but this drama is not her strongest. If you're looking at watching this because of her alone, I would not recommend it.
Music:
I consider this the weakest aspect of this drama. I was not a fan of the primary score, and I felt it distracted from the emotional heaviness of several scenes. The OST does not feature any real standout tracks and is repetitive almost to the point of annoyance at times. This was my only real "issue" with the production side - the "mood" of the music did not always match the "mood" of the scene, and this is a pretty significant distraction.
Rewatch:
This drama is highly rewatchable because of the memorable moments alone. It doesn't rely heavily on twists or cliffhangers, so previous knowledge does not overwrite the full impact on your second watch.
