Well I have different thoughts. Shane was very insecure about Jonathan getting close to Carrie (that bike scene and when he gets injured) even when he didn’t know her, there’s no way he’s jealous just because he think she’ll snatch her *friend* away from him. Jonathan and Shane tried their best to deny their feelings by projecting them onto different people, more so Shane. Could be internalised homophobia or just not wanting to accept themselves as deviants or abnormal (since this movie is kinda old). By saying that Jonathan is his best friend in the last scene, he’s just expressing his denial. Your interpretation seems valid too but I saw it like this
