You're review is so spot on. I ended up watching b/c I had recently just finished watching Boys Over Flowers 2009 Korean and wanted to compare.
I have a love hate relationship with the series b/c agree 100% that the cast is great and well cast for the parts. Shan Cai voice was extremely irritating throughout so thanks for letting me know that was dubbing. Way too many episode and glad someone else pointed out that they got married and her family wasn't there; strange indeed! I do like the fact that there are multiple nods to the original Taiwanese version of the show.
However, Darren Chen's smile is so effing adorable every time he was on scream I lit up like a school girl in love. I also have the biggest crush in the world on Dylan Wang that boy' face has no right to be that good looking!!
Everything you said is exactly what I was feeling watching it. I was definitely distracted by the length of the pants. I kept thinking was this the style back then?? why would a man that tall have pants that length??? Anyway, adored your review.
See what had happened was.....I watched Boys Over Flowers (Korean) and became obsessed with the story. I wanted to know what other versions existed and what the source material was. I have since watched the 90s anime, The 2001 Taiwanese version, the 2018 Chinese Version, the 1995 Japanese movie, the 2005 Japanese series (I still have to watch the 2nd season).
I like all the cast for different reasons. The Korean OST and the Chinese OST are both fire. My favorite Rui is Darren Chen from the Chinese version and then Vic Chou from the Taiwanese version. My favorite Domyoji is Lee Min Ho from the Korean version and then Dylan Wang in the Chinese version. I loved the way the both looked in the clothes they were in; they both exuded that cocky swag one. I mean I fell in love with Lee Mi Ho because of this show and am too obsessed with Dylan Wang right now. The best Makino for me is Mao Inoue and Barbie Hsu. The Makino that got on my nerves is Shen Yue.
The source material is almost 30 years old; let that sink in. I do understand the problems with the main male character and his actions but it is JUST TV and series of books. It's ultimately wish fulfillment and fantasy like almost romance novels and movies.
