The novel is incomplete itself. In the novel, it was hinted that Xuanye is black panther demon and he himself aware of it from the start and even warned Banxia if he one day transform to the Demon form (full moon night). But unfortunately at the climax (or before?), the novel was abandoned. We never get to see him transforming to black panther and his backstory, what more the ending.

Also, I want to mark here. The original novel are ghost stories (and ghost have censorship in China, so the change to demons in the drama ver). Xuanye catch both evil ghosts and evils demons in the novel, so that's not much change there. But Banxia, in the novel Banxia is a 21st modern girl who can see and interact with ghosts. Later she time-travelled to Xuanye's world. And in the novel, Banxia have a special ability/a spirit that resided in her heart and soul that can connect with ghosts, demons, and spirits (for eg: she can found the demon's hiding place using that spirit of hers). Again, the full backstory are left unfinished. The novel set-up is a forbidden love between demon and human, but they not "normal", so..
-unfortunately it is incomplete 😅

As for the drama, it is originally set-up for HE. There's a theory that Banxia is a half human half demon based on her poster having a fox demon in it. Again, unfortunately, the fox demon didn't make appearance till the end. So, let's hope the S2 is real and with the original casts so they come continue with that story and have that happy ending that was planned for the 😭

I have a question. About Xuanye's five swords and the backlashes

He did get offered for modern dramas. The next two of his historical dramas, those are breakup dramas with his company. His contract said he need to do another 2 dramas for it to be completed.

Besides, cnetz preferred historical dramas more compared to modern. It's why you see most actors representative projects are from historical dramas. Most.

Sorry. I forgot about Xuanye's black panther 😅. In the book, it's said he is a black panther demon and he know from the beginning and even warm Banxia regarding his change (Book Banxia is a human who can see ghosts, spirits and demons, same as her drama ver.). The book was left unfinished, at the climax. Fox demon and Xuanye's story, no one really get to see/read the ending.

Trivia? the drama team asked the original author about the direction she wants to go with the rest of her story.

The Jade Pear, Snake Demon, Fox Demon (if it is there) are from the original novel. But like I mentioned above, only Snake Demon who are fateful to the original. The others..

Before that. please note that the original novel are about ghosts hunting (jade pear are actually blood ghost in the novel). From what I read, China have censorship with ghosts. Hence the changes in almost everything in the drama. The stories, characters and backstories are all there. Just that the screenwriter mix and match every storylines, characters, places and create a brand new story. From ghost to demon.

For eg: the first story and second story in the drama are originally from the same story in the book.

The reunion inn and the puppet is a new addition and an original idea from screenwriter. But, the love and hate between the father and daughter are from the book (in the novel - 7 y/o ghost girl's hate and grievance to her father).

Edit : The nine-lives cat demon, human-faced owl demon, the demon in the painting, well basically all the demons except fox demon and snake demon are some of the changes in the drama. Even Chi Xue changed from demi-god (book) to rabbit demon (drama) 😂

Maybe it's unrelated but related.. The snake demon arc are from the original novel. I haven't reach the latest eps yet, but judging from the spoilers I watched and I read, look like the snake demon arc are the only one that survived in the drama ver. Means, they are the only one that followed the same original backstory and storyline as in the novel 😅

So true. I see no complaints regarding the changes in the drama ver. So it's all good.

It's so tiring. Every time after the ending of his drama. I swear to never watch his drama again. Because the ending are so heartbreaking. But every time he get new drama airing, every time too I watch. It's so tiring 🤧

Yes. They changed everything. Even the characters design and relationship. For eg, in the novel ver, Ban Xia are the only human there. But in this drama ver, Xuan Ye are the only one who is a demon (except, Chi Xue changed from a demi-god to rabbit demon). But maybe there will be a surprise on the next ep? Sima Lingying for eg..

And I pray the ending is not "It's only a dream". That would be worst. And yes too. I need that man to stay alive till the end and get the happy ending 😭

I read the novel back in 2022
1- the original novel - Ban Xia time-travelled to Tang Dinasty and she can see ghosts, demons, spirits since she was a child. She was never afraid of them, more like she pretended she didn't see them because she hated the creatures

2 - the drama changed a lot of things, like 90% of it? Bc of China censorship abt the ghosts. The original novel centered around ghosts. Even Xuan Ye original character are the person whose responsible to catch evil ghosts and spirits and sent them to the other world. Not much diff from the drama ver. But yeah..

3 - the novel are unfinished. I'm not sure where everyone get the HE in the novel. I read the novel years ago, And Idk abt the latest update. But what I know, it is unfinished but they get the original novel author to ask abt how and where she would iked to see her story go from the left chapter

4 - as it is unfinished, no one know the ending. (SPOILER) And no one know how, when, where, and why Xuan Ye change to black panther demon later. His original identity has always be that.

5 - (SPOILER) the "other world" I mentioned in #3, this is only my speculation. But I believe they changed it to Wu You Realm (the drama Chinese title Wu You Du). This realm, we saw a glimpse of it in Ban Xia's dream.

Sorry for the long reply

Really didn't know how I managed to finish this show. From rooting the main couple to skipping all their scenes towards the end. That's how bad it went. The saving grace are Duangkamol, her character remained complex till the end, and the reason why finished the show. I stayed to watch her scenes, especially the romance with Viwat. And also the scriptwriter trying so hard to make the step-mom as a villain with 3-dimensional character. She is evil all through and through, no need to justify her actions 😒

Watched all the 4 eps now, and so far it's interesting. I liked both the main characters!
