This series drags quite a bit imho (things don't really get exciting until after around episodes 15-17). However, after that, it's good. Also, due to the fact that it's low budget, there aren't really as many cool, military fight scenes as one may expect. Additionally, there's no proper BL, per se, but the bromances are real. Pretty excited for season two, but my main takeaway is: this season really didn't need to be 30 episodes long.

True. lol My point in saying that is: that same creep factor exists in virtually every popular historical drama coming out of Asia, but in most of them, they cast the actors to be closer in age, but that's rarely taken into consideration which is sad/creepier imho because we still live in a world where girls ages 8-12 are being openly married off to men two/three times their age whereas such relationships between men aren't so common. Nevertheless, being 'assigned' into a relationship (arranged marriage & forced servitude) is the bigger factor here imho.

As the king of a kingdom, everyone in the movie besides the king was technically his submissive (the queen included). I don't find it creepy that a grown adult (read: older teenager...appearing to be around 17/18) found romantic attraction to a pre-teen..particularly taking historical context into account. This was commonplace back then except more common among heterosexuals. If you take a look at the stories behind most all Asian historical royal drams that a involve a king/emperor and his queen or concubine, you'll very often see stark age differences. The difference between those love stories and this is that in the other dramas, the actors are cast to be around the same age. I'm not saying age isn't a creep factor, but it's wholly irrelevant because the king is the king. He can technically choose whomever he wanted and they'd be just as obliged to obey his command no matter what the age. History is hard to look at in the face sometimes, but I don't think that factor makes these stories ignoble. Also, he raised the guys, but he clearly didn't make a habit of sleeping with them seeing as how Rim gets called out by his brothers for sleeping with the king.
I agree, love is wanting the other person to be happy. The king loved the queen and realized he couldn't truly make her happy...which is why he initially assisted on her leaving to back to Yuan (China). The king loved Rim which is why he did virtually everything for him to make him happy. There is no indication in the film prior Rim's affair with the queen, of course, that Rim was either unwilling or unhappy to be with the king. It's a stretch for me to believe that Rim and the queen were truly in love considering they spent 95% of their very, very short time spent together only having sex. The pedo/control thing is a big factor for the king and Rim, but they've been around each other, getting to know each other for years by this point.
One thing I don't like/confuses me is when Ye Hua actually concedes to giving the fungal grass to the Ghost Tribe...like this woman kidnapped your child, made several attempts on your wife's life and actively wanted her dead until the day she herself died....how could you think to save her already dead baby in light of all that? lol....is there such a thing as being TOO noble?

They do deserve to be treated better, but I don't want them to always be a factor in a gay romance..I just don't think they need to be around as much as they are, period. Unpopular opinion, I know..

The Ming-Kit relationship is the reason I watch this show. The main leads are cute and, were I reading the novel, I'd gush more over them, but the actors don't go "all the way" enough for me. Ming and Kit are delightful, though imo. I'm loving every bit of their scenes.
