If I understand it correctly, he’s a minister and/or general and what’s basically happening is a military coup which would explain why the king doesn’t have more soldiers with him. The king also left the capital, so I guess many of his soldiers would have been left there.

I disagree. I think the second couple have a lot of layers intertwined into their positions in society. I just think that the main couple's story is moving a little a bit too slow for some people...not for me, though. I'm enjoying every episode.
