The character Joss is playing is not 200 hundred years old he was in his late teens when Thara turned him into a vampire back in 1871. He is a hundred and seventy something years old. So technically Mark is younger than Tong, since he never actually clocked 20 years before dying. The character Joss is portraying has no interactions with humans, which is why his face is always stiff. Even as a human Mark was always sick, this limited to a very large degree his interaction with his age mates. In the novel Tong was too scared to run when he found out what Mark is (if you paid attention to Gawin's face during that scene he was literally trembling), which correlates with when Bella found out what Edward is in the movie Twilight.
Mark does not have romantic feelings for Tong, until later on, Mark did not raise Tong in order to fuck him or have carnal knowledge of him. Rather he was instructed to protect Tong cause of his golden blood by the head of their vampire group— Thara. And he was not closed to Tong as he grew up, rather he was supposed to protect the orphanage and give financial support whenever requested by the teacher.
