The ML is really not an 'ideal' or strong character, he is just a protagonist with all faults of a normal human being. What if the new pair face another tragedy like death of a child, would he run away again? I think its the portrayal of the ML, and the attempt to make the viewers sympathise with him makes the drama 'in'credible.
