The problem with XL is he won't "take the first step" as Xiaoyao requires. And when he does do something for her, he makes it so that his cause also benefits from it. This leads to Xiaoyao, who obviously cares a lot about him, to misunderstand his true feelings.

1. This was explained by Jing Ye in ep 32. Jing could get out of the formation, but XY would turn into ashes if he took her along. Therefore, he decided to stay there and die with XY. 2.
