I haven't watched the movie yet, but both the movie and this drama are adaptations of arcs from the manga / anime. They are both legit stories (this one is not really of great importance to the main plot, given that it's a story mainly focused on Hijikata and Sougo, who're not main characters, one would argue) and I highly recommend for you to watch this one if you're interested. It's not really a sequel to the movie, it's more like a continuation of the general plot, like, it doesn't continue where the first movie left off (I suppose, cause like I said I haven't watched it yet, I'm just implying facts based from the anime/manga cause I believe that they made the live action versions similar).
