I've noticed that 4/10 dramas are produced by Daylight Entertainment. They're truly the #1 company in Cdrama industry.
Indeed! They are a powerhouse when it comes to stellar executions, and their brand in my opinion is synonymous with excellence . They have not once disappointed. I have watched all of their series at the exception of: - Serenade of Peaceful Joy - The Story of Minglan
I might not have had an initial interest in the synopsis of those 2 dramas, but I'll eventually get to them because I have that blind a faith in Daylight Entertainment.
Interesting article! I watched Cdramas the most, however, I've never paid attention to Douban rating. Therefore,…
Your username cracks me up.
Every time I see one of your comments, I hesitate to respond to it from fear of lacking reverence in doing so. I do not wish to have my head chopped off.
If anyone wants to see a longer list of Douban's top-rated C-dramas (with English subs), check out my Reddit post:https://www.reddit.com/r/CDrama/comments/mrnb5n/douban_highest_rated_cdramas_of_all_time_and/The…
Indeed, it is about the perspective. In this case, trying to see it through Douban raters vs MDL raters. What…
I could be wrong, but here is my take on this: - The MDLers who have watched and appreciated the aforementioned series might be, more often than not, quite serious about filming and rather critical of the flaws present in execution, cinematography and scripting, hence harsher raters. They are a more mature portion of MDL users population. - Then you have the younger, more into fluff and more forgiving portion; they are the ones who are quite generous with their ratings. There are many watchlists on MDL with dramas I would consider utter trash, but which are rated quite high (between 8-10) because they featured an idol.
I'm not familiar with Douban ratings so I won't make comparisons but I always thought MDL ratings were generous.…
Indeed, my ratings are usually around 2-2.5 points below the average MDL rating for a series at the exception of Lakorns, which I tend to rate higher than K-Dramas, C-Dramas & J-Dramas to offset the subpar quality of the series coming out of Thailand.
If I were not as generous, all the lakorns I have watched would have been rated between 1 - 4.
This is such a captivating piece! Thank you for doing the research legwork, and sharing the results with us. I have seen 50% of the aforementioned titles, and cannot wait to watch the ones I am missing.
These are some of the best drama series, which have come out of Mainland China in the past 2 decades. The ratings could not be more accurate considering the respective viewing audience demographics (MDL vs. Douban), but the placement, not so much. I have, for instance, found Like A Flowing River & The Bad Kids to be better series than The battle of Changsha & Chinese Paladin; so did MDLers, it seems.
Albeit the difference in the rating system used on both sites as well as the number of raters are factors, which would undoubtedly cause the disparity, I believe the single most important element to be cultural (norms/values/beliefs, customs and traditions, societal organization, forms of government/politics/patriotism, economy, language affinity, etc). DOUBANers are primarily Chinese, whereas MDLers are from all over the world but in majority Westerners. Though there will be comparative similarities when evaluating a series as far as the script, acting performances, cinematography and directing are concerned, every user's ultimate rating will hinge upon his/her/their personal connection and viewing experience: 2 facets heavily impacted by one's cultural sensitivities. A native Chinese who has lived through the 80s and 90s will connect better to the storyline about China's economic reform in Like A Flowing River (than I the Canadian would for instance), and will probably rate it higher because of the said connection. Yet, the both of us will agree on the fact that the drama was undeniably well executed, and will give it high ratings.
At any rate, I'll be looking forward to the next piece coming from you. Very well done!
PS: The Longest Day in Chang'an (2019) is another noteworthy series.
Update: Viu has it subbed on Lakorn Galaxy. https://lakorngalaxy.com/oum-rak-game-luang-2020/ Thanks Viu! ---------------------------------------------- Hi Guys, Does anyone know where to find Episode 17 subbed? I was unable to. www.koreandrama.es does not have it as it is indicated at the beginning of the episode. Please let me know; thanks.
Pong has the cheating husband/boyfriend character down pat.
No one in lakorns portrays a cheater better. He does that cheating and lying act so naturally and so convincingly, I'd be afraid to date him in real life. I think the ladies around him are afraid too, since he is still single! Lol.
On a more serious note, Pong is a charismatic actor, one who is very good at his craft. I never tire of watching him.
Bo is a wonderful actress. She seemed to have taken some time off to devote herself to her family, and has not been in any lakorns or movies in the past 6 years (if I am not mistaken). I became a fan of hers after her extraordinary performance in Roy Ruk Raeng Kaen as the narcissistic Paktra. As a fan, I miss her, and I hope she will return to the small and large screen soon. I wish her and her family the best.
This man has more SWAGGER in his left leg than all the Korean men combined! The way he walks makes me weak in the knees EVERY SINGLE TIME. Now, don't get me started on those dimples and that lower lip!
Joe, it is great that you have added Murakami Shingo. I am currently watching Sanada Maru, and ABSOLUTELY loving it! I wish we had more hours in a day so that I could binge-watch it within a week; I now have 30 remaining episodes to go.
I ran Shazam on it and it provides a link to buy it in Apple Music. And you can hear it on youtube searching for…
I'll check out Little Forest and Our Little Sister, thank you. I was actually the person who ended up uploading the Kakekomi soundtrack to Youtube a couple of years ago since it was not available π. I also have it on my MDL profile page.
