If you're looking for a historical K-drama with action, romance, and a solid dose of bromance, Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth is a great pick. Set in the Silla Dynasty, it follows a group of young men from different backgrounds who are chosen to become Hwarang—elite warriors trained to protect the future of the kingdom.
At the heart of the drama is Moo-myung (Park Seo-joon), a skilled fighter who enters the Hwarang under a false name to uncover the truth about his friend’s death. Then there's Sam Maek-jong (Park Hyung-sik), the hidden king of Silla, who has spent his life in the shadows, waiting for his moment to take the throne. Their personalities clash at first, but as they train together, their relationship evolves into something much deeper—full of tension, rivalry, and mutual respect.
The drama does a great job balancing action and emotional storytelling. There are plenty of beautifully choreographed fight scenes, but at its core, Hwarang is about friendship, loyalty, and personal growth. The chemistry between the main characters is one of its biggest strengths—whether it’s the playful banter between the Hwarang members or the romantic tension between Moo-myung and the female lead, Ah-ro (Go Ara).
Of course, no K-drama is complete without a love triangle! Sam Maek-jong and Moo-myung both develop feelings for Ah-ro, leading to some intense moments that keep the romance interesting. While Ah-ro's character could have been given more depth, she does serve as a bridge between the two male leads, adding emotional weight to the story.
The cinematography is stunning—the vibrant costumes, grand palace settings, and breathtaking landscapes make every scene visually appealing. And let’s not forget the OST! Songs like Even If I Die, It’s You by BTS’s V and Jin perfectly capture the youthful, rebellious spirit of the Hwarang.
That said, the drama isn’t without its flaws. Some viewers feel the pacing could be improved, especially in the middle episodes, and certain plot points—like the political intrigue—could have been explored more deeply. But despite its imperfections, Hwarang remains an entertaining and heartfelt drama that is easy to get invested in.
If you’re in the mood for a historical drama with a mix of adventure, bromance, and romance, Hwarang is a solid choice!
