Ah thanks, I forgot the general's exact relationship to the emperor in NIF. Definitely getting the NIF influence/homage here. Both losing their martial arts, lots of people wondering if they are as before and a way to restore their fighting abilities but will cut short their lives. Also later in the book there's Golden Lists which rank fighters and upcoming talents too. But one difference is here the emperor seems to love and protect his son Chuhe while Lin Shu was a regrettable casualty to the emperor. Both want the case of treason reopened and re-investigated.
I got The Feels seeing the Mingde Emperor, same actor as emperor in Lang Ya Pang (NIF). The royal brother that was to be beheaded and ended up committing suicide here is Langya Wang. Coincidence? I'm reading the English translation of the novel, on ch 150+ and the Mingde Emperor orders 6th prince Xiao Chu He (Xiao Se) to be found and says to tell him 'I have regrets' about how the matter was handled. It reminds me of how the NIF emperor tried to tell Mei Changsu how he regretted what happened and mea culpa. In both cases, the emperor killed a loyal popular subject and brother unjustly due to perceived threat to their power. 💔 The reverberations of that action bleeds to the next generation.

Yes, he had to be dragged away by the 2 maids haha. Also that scene where he was trying to get Liwei's sympathy by telling her what a hard life Yin Zheng has had. So funny, Yin Zheng told him to hush but gave him the secret hand signal behind to continue. The other TRoP connection (which I'm sure you've noticed) is 2nd Prince Yin Song was Helian Zheng. Quite a difference in personality, I prefer the zany 死缠烂打 Helian Zheng.
