Not Maya trying so hard to still hate Taichi but now that she starting to see what Kohei sees in him she can't…
Am I the only one who shipped Maya with Yasu? I wouldn't have minded too much seeing that development. Although he's not as straightforward as Taichi he's similarly empathetic and they seemed to click. Pity. Can any manga readers confirm if that lead anywhere please?
Could you explain how you see the Maya character as "useful?" I feel just the opposite. She is a complete waste…
Don't get me wrong. I find Maya annoying as hell and she took up way too much screentime. Screentime that would have been better spent on Taichi's friends if they needed filler that bad (although it seems her character is from the manga). But firstly, she acted as a sounding board for Kohei's feelings toward Taichi. The more she opposed Taichi the more Kohei simped to defend him. When she first started blocking Taichi it was comical but as that prolonged it became plain annoying.
Secondly, as shown in the last episode she allows us to see Taichi's empathetic nature being demonstrated not just towards Kohei with whom he has some attraction but to another human being clearly in distress but unable to express it, even when that person is someone with whom there is mutual dislike. Whether he realizes it or not it's confirmation that he chose the right career path giving support to the deaf and hard of hearing community.
And third, her life experiences are very similar to Kohei's. However we feel about her she serves as a contrast as to how dark and bitter Kohei could have become if Taichi hadn't come into his life. Which is why Kohei is drawn to her and tries to be a good mentor to her. He sees himself or how he used to be in her.

For me the only frustrating thing about this series with strong themes about communication and being misunderstood is the lack of communication and the misunderstanding between the leads. That said I I'm enjoying every minute of it.
