I stopped watching two weeks ago when I realized the writers are making a very serious issue so outrageous comical and playing with our sense emotions skirting a very serious issue in asian society. Korean society in general avoid divorce and mental health issues. Men with mistresses is a real Korean problem, and as a culture wives are expected to turn a blind eye.
Seriously I don’t like Jing Ran’s mother (mother in law from hell), and the actress over acts her role to the point of caricature. Not we are half way in the drama, and little or no chemistry between Shao Peng Cheng or Cheng Zhen Zhen. They feel more like besties - comfortable work buddies but there’s really no romantic spark - just My True Friend. Deng Lun is awesome at giving life to a 2 dimensional character - writer and script is lacking overall. His acting skills prevents the character from becoming a stereotype. Deng Lun is the only reason I’m watching this show. His acting gets better with each show - and he manages to transcend a bad script and weak plot - giving his character depth - and not 2D caricature.
Zhu Yi Long’s character is weak and boring - and his acting was better highlighted in “The Story of Ming Lan”. Here is comes across as a momma boy and feeble. Where’s the angst from his early childhood, growing up without a dad, his overbearing mother, and his decision to work in Italy for several years? These are implied early on but never properly addressed in epi thereafter. A Chinese In a foreign country doesn’t just develop a successful architectural company overseas without drive, vision and a dream - especially in a architecture and in Italy. The script does arises the issue of cultural prejudice in passing. However the character of Jing Ran comes across as lame (I blame it on the script!) What’s with Cheng Zhen Zhen standing up for him at a council meeting in Italy - How realistic is that? Again weak storyline and script.
Angelababy’s acting doesn’t shine here as it did in “The General and I” or “One Smile is Very Alluring”. As Chen Zhen Zhen, she is missing a spark (energy) and depth as a modern educated girl with a deep sense of righteousness and integrity in pursuing her goals and dreams as a career woman in the cut throat world of real estate in China. I’ll blame it on the script. Also I think Zhong Dan Ni (Cinderella Chef) or Liang Jim (Eternal Love) or the younger new generation of Chinese actresses like Fair Xiong (Put Your Head on My Shoulder) - ok I’m bias.
How do I rate this show? C for plot and Script B for overall casting - except Deng Lun who deserves an A. Most online commentators are dropping the show for exactly that - weak romance angle :(
Dropped, not worth the time to watch!
