The real reason is, each time they tried to select a new queen, someone would be killed and hung where the crown princess died, from my understanding, in order to prevent that from happening, the king placed a ban. Unfortunately, his marriage is not up to him but the internal court, so he can't just stop his marriage without a justifiable reason.
