I can relate to you, I felt I was left in the dark in the ring scene as it didn't show clearly the father was there, I only knew though others...I've reached quit far, he hadn't that deep relation with her father, from Yi Zhi's veiw, he didn't want it to harm anyone so he gave it to some one who'd keep it save only without understanding it
When he returned the ring, The father was right next to the wife, definitely he knew she's his wife. When he first knocked the door, he didn't knew she would be there and wanted to help even though he was told "They are poor, They hold no benefit", and I believe he wanted to give what he was entrusted with to the wife at first but drew back because of her sickness, and wanted to return it to her daughter whom he couldn't meet.
I believe there are bits of the story between him and her father that we don't know about yet.
