The main couple (Feng Zhi Wei and Ning Yi) don't end up together. Ning Yi becomes emperor and asks Feng Zhi Wei to be his empress, however she has other plans. Also turns out that the previous emperor (Ning Yi's father) didn't actually die yet, when everyone thought he did. Ning Qi ultimately goes insane thinking that the emperor title is his and still believes that Ning Yi is a fake emperor and faked the degree stating that he is emperor. Also Helian Zheng ends up dying, getting shot with an arrow.
Feng Zhi Wei approaches the previous emperor with the intention of killing him ,but ultimately does not. The previous emperor states that even if Feng Zhi Wei is to become empress she and Ning Yi will never live happily, they will end up hating each other like Ya le (Ning Yi's mother) and the emperor once did.
Feng Zhi Wei and Gu Nan Yi are talking in the house, and Feng Zhi Wei tells him to go with the others to Minhai however he refuses, saying "你在哪儿 我在哪儿" (roughly translates to "wherever you go I'll go too"). Telling her that he will stay in the house waiting for Feng Zhi Wei to come back.
Finally near the end of the last episode, Feng Zhi Wei playing a tune on a instrument on a snowy day at the edge of a cliff, as Ning Yi is riding inside his carriage he recognizes the tune and immediately orders the carriage to stop. As Ning Yi looks out the carriage window, Feng Zhi Wei starts to narrate something along the lines of "LiuLang(Ning Yi's alias) forgive me for lying to you, you and I have caused the loss of too many lives, I can't live with that. If we meet again in the next life, lets just be ordinary people." as she's saying that she jumps off (back first) the cliff as Ning Yi continues looking out the window crying.
As it continues snowing, Ning Yi is now walking up the stairs to the castle and beings to narrate " Feng Zhi Wei, i'm sure you've already reached the land beyond, where you can finally be free. Yet I, even though I have to live the rest of my life in pain. I can't end it with a stroke of a sword and follow you there. That's because you and I have unfulfilled wishes here on earth. I, Ning Yi, have witnessed too much destruction caused by the fight for power. Therefore, I will spend the rest of my life making sure that tyranny does not rear its ugly head. There will be no bribery, or negligence, no innocent shall be wronged. Only then, will I be able to meet you, Feng Zhi Wei."

Whats a good drama without any romance?ಠ_ಠ. But instead of the normal "everyone ends up happy together" its more like a tragic love story between 2 of the main characters.
