K-Drama WATCH IT YOURSELF AND DECIDE!
I didn't watch the original, so I'm not here to compare. I'm here to tell you why this version works on its own.
Doctor X: Mafia In White tells the story of a lone wolf, Dr. Gye Sujeong, a female doctor with a mysterious past who joins a well-known private hospital infested by corruption. Doctors ignoring their duties, patients treated according to financial status.
She walks into this hospital with her combat boots on, her surgical skill, and a motto: I NEVER FAIL.
Now, how is this any different from the many medical K-dramas that already exist?
I've watched quite a few, and honestly I love how most of them manage to stand out even in a sea of them, and this isn't any different.
This show exposes the politics that can arise even in the medical field, the hierarchies and how they affect the functioning of these hospitals, the uncomfortable side of some doctors who are in it for the money, the incompetent ones who just ride high on a title.
This is not to disregard the efforts of other hardworking and passionate doctors, because they exist alongside these ones too. But it's a brutal truth that needs to be told.
The show covers all these uncomfortable topics while still informing the viewer with medical cases and more.
What I love is how it does this by mixing genres you have action, emotion, humour, all in one.
Kim Jiwon graces our screens as Gye Sujeong, the Mafia In White. She does her job, helps her patients, bends to no rules or hierarchies, stands on what she does, calls out what's wrong and sets things right if needed. All while having a mysterious past that's slowly revealed, with vulnerabilities and worries of her own.
I've seen people call her acting expressionless and I want to give my take on that. The character isn't expressionless, she just has this stern look on her face which is also an expression. In moments like these she shifts all her reactions to her eyes, which we call eye acting, and she's doing it perfectly.
She doesn't just wear that look. You should see her face light up at the sight of food, that cute side to her that's almost childlike, so different from her at work.
Kim Jiwon is doing a great job giving us an interesting character.
There's also Park Taejeong, the intern that looks up to her, her agency's boss who is also her family, and more.
So far, it's fun, intense and refreshing.
