I agree! You're right, at the start, Pi already told us how insecure he was, and more importantly, how he came to be. I guess it's just easy for the viewers to forget about this as the series progresses cos, you know, we are being served nice visuals - let's admit that. But then, yeah his reasons for being guarded and feeling the way he does are very valid. And yes, I think he is using Nan as a crutch - because when you like someone, you are the one in control in a sense that you deicide what to do with those feelings. Being on the other end of the pursuit (the receiving end) could be overwhelming, especially for someone who has experienced rejection all his life. Being suddenly the object of attention of a popular guy might be triggering the insecurities he's had to fight off in the beginning of the series.

My guess is the scene at the beginning of the series will happen sometime after the middle and then it will be resolved in the last 2 episodes. Opening the story with the climax and then backtracking is a good format to catch a viewer's attention.
