For those of you who have read the manga what do you think
It’s more like a spin off story. Everything is different from the novel but at least it flows well. The basis like setting and the main characters personalities are pretty much the same. Still worth a watch just don’t expect it to follow the novel

Do i need to watch Martial Universe to watch this drama?
Just to add on to what Jagad said so you have a better idea. Martial Universe and Battle Through the Heavens (BTTH) are written by the same author but the setting and people are in 2 different worlds, thus there is no correlation within the story.

BTTH was actually written before MU, in both the stories when the are done with their current world the main characters and their lover go up to a Gods realm and more adventures there, which is the only link between the 2 stories.

Alot changed in the drama and it is moving towards a brand new story kind of scenario based on the 1st 4 episodes. Not complaining about it as I feel the script writer and director has done a better job here than the bunch of clowns who did MU.

-Side note-

From a novel perspective, I really liked MU better as the author has a really bad habit of consistently describing the female characters (figure features etc) in BTTH while not bothering to describe the male characters (even Xiao Yan had little to no description, from memory of what the author wrote Xiao Yan - Dark hair, eye color is black, slender frame and that's about it. Yao Lao is an old man). The description of females was so repetitive to the point of getting irritating (Every time that female character appears he would use the same description; imagine reading the same description of Xiao Xun Er n number of time). In MU as it was the authors later book he mellowed down on that and made the book flow better and less irritation.

For the drama it is the exact opposite in terms of how much I like the 2, lol

Watch the 1st episode of the drama, quite a lot changed in terms of story.
However it still flows pretty smoothly, character wise still in line with the way the novel portrayed them.
The changes/additions were pretty good as it helped to “answer” some question like his Mother’s death which the writer didn’t bother with in his story.
Overall pretty good as of this point of time. They brought forward some things from the later parts of the novel but still flows pretty nicely as it doesn’t feel forced due the “answer” and made it flow based on that. I’ll wait till at least episode 5 to give it a rating but just based on episode 1 I will give it at least an 8

If it’s the same from the trailers. It is similar to how the author described it and in the manga. It is also…
Yeah agreed it doesn’t look very nice but it’s more or less a training weapon that he uses till mid story of the novel

Thanks CaptShazam didn't realize you put in the trailer but from the few scenes YY seems to be portraying Ye Xiu…
Agreed on your point on character changes from that perspective.

That sword looks awful......
If it’s the same from the trailers. It is similar to how the author described it and in the manga. It is also not a sword, in Chinese it called 尺, literally it means ruler in English, it’s a blunt weapon that is meant for for bashing rather than cutting.

I agree with you, I too don’t expect them to do a 1:1

I don’t like it too much when they totally alter the personality of the characters. The main characters are the “soul” of the story which is written by the author, so I certainly don’t want it changed.

P.S. I was guessing you read the novel/watch the anime. The link for others who were reading my comment, sorry for not being clear

-Off topic comments about the web novel (Just wanted to get this off my chest) -

What I really like about this story (The web novel and anime) is that the author has a great idea that the gaming industry does not have. (Not sure about DOTA as I don't play it, but DOTA is not considered an MMORPG)

Creating a Professional league which is linked back to the MMORPG that the players are playing in. Characters used in the league are making use of equipment, character development from the actual MMORPG, so to make the team stronger they need to gather material for making equipment, they also have a special feature which allows for players to make their own equipment based on their style of play (Silver equipment)
This requires a R&D team and alot of material to experiment on.

They also need to level up the pro player's character for things like skill points, lvl etc which can only be achieved in the actual game itself.

If the gaming industry were to adopt this concept I think the game will become a huge hit. Imagine World of Warcraft were to do this, it makes the fans of the game/teams feel involved in helping the team they support become better directly by helping to gather material etc and during off season even get to see their "idols" online.

It's like how we support our fav football teams etc, except there is more involvement other than just cheering/singing during live games and it becomes a never ending "vicious" cycle. You love your team? Then support it by playing the game and be in the Guild that is afiliated to the club which in turns is actually managed by the club.

Keeps the player base in the game on a long term basis which is a big problem that MMORPGs is facing today, losing player base as they lose interest or a new game comes around.

Title The King’s Avatar Spoiler
Behind the scenes preview trailer:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHnmNeotKXMNote: It's still in the production…
Thanks CaptShazam didn't realize you put in the trailer but from the few scenes YY seems to be portraying Ye Xiu a bit differently from the web novel. Simple actions like when he was in front of the computer and he raises his fist into the air like a "celebration" which really isn't "in character" of what the author portray Ye Xiu as, even when Ye Xiu were to do something that nobody else can set the record of most individual victories. He is being portrayed as "Ok.... I've done that..... So?" kind of attitude, it's like to him it's as natural as breathing so there really is nothing to celebrate about.

That is also the attitude that get the Lady boss Chen Guo extremely mad with him which created a lot of funny moments.

Try watching the anime you'll get what I mean by Ye Xiu being a laid back on the out side kind of person.

Just watch episode 1 will do so it doesn't spoil too much (The anime cut alot of stuff from the novel)

now I'm starting to think whether I would watch this when it airs... martial universe somewhat disappointed me…
I agree with CaptShazam, it is most likely the script writers because that was what they wanted the actor to portray. I've not watched YY act before but based on what the other commenters are saying his acting is good so I'll take that on the surface value.

From the novel, Ye Xiu is portrayed as a "laid back", "doesn't really care" kind of attitude person but is actually a person driven by success and passionate for the game.

The author doesn't write romance very well (based on the books he has written) thus he skips that part in his books by not having romance (hinting at it but nothing about relationships). If the script writer adds romance into the drama I won't mind it (It's more of covering for the author's weakness)

I personally feel the 1st half of the web novel is written very well, with the middle portion slowly getting stale but the last 1/3 of the book I could feel the author running out of ideas and if the script writer beefs that part up or even altering the story to make it flow will be good.

Lastly I am really curious how they are going to merge the out of game story with the in game portion. The gist of the entire story is about the game at least 1/2 of the time the book is talking about in game events.

Hopefully, this will stay true to the web novel. If it does I'm sure it'll be fantastic as the web novel has more…
I will really want to see how does Yang Yang act as Yang Xiu, because the way he portray Ling Dong is absolutely terrible, so this will help determine if it is him or the script writer that messed it up
Replying to Xiao Yan Aug 10, 2018
Yes they messed it big time, thier are character that aren't even supposed to be there at start, which are introduced…
Actually I will defer to the poster above watch the drama 1st when it is finished then go read the novel, because if you read and liked the novel you’ll not watch the drama.
Replying to shadow Aug 10, 2018
watched the first episodes and they messed up this story big times... :( how can Lin Lang Tian become so friendly…
Agreed and I believe you read the novel like me, the interesting thing of the novel was how the main character grew ( to become stronger)and overcome challenges. That’s what made the story magical. This drama from the start was just too..... how do I put it, all over the place trying to pull too much from the future and no where; mix, match and forcefully create to make the story “happen” but in fact made the story nonsensical.

To me people who are trying to defend this drama have not read the novel and are just watching it for the actor, I am not saying that is wrong just different perspectives.

So for the 2 groups of people:

1. People who have not read the novel. Watch it and enjoy it.

2. People who read and liked the novel skip it like it is the plague

Do people have it out for this drama or what? How can the rating be this low with just two eps subbed?!
To me anything above -1000000000000000000000000000000000000000 for this drama is an epic success after watching the 1st 30 min I wanted to quit the drama I dragged myself to continue watching till episode 3 to see if there is any improvement but it only got worst. So bye bye to such a disappointment, looked forward to it but ended as such an utter disappointment.
On Martial Universe Aug 10, 2018
Other than the title and character names non of the story is from the original novel. From the 1st second onwards. The production team twisted the entire story and characters to be someone different from the main characters to the villains, creating bogus relationships such as Ling lan Tian with Ling Dong/ Ling Xiao.

Making the characters “character” totally different, example such as Ling Dong.
I don’t know if it’s the actor or the script writer. Ling Dong is a sensible, fiercely loyal and filial person. In the drama he is a bumbling idiot.

Honestly why bother using the novel’s title/character/setting if that is the only thing that the stupid production crew wants? People who read the novel are all going to be disappointed.

What do most novel readers want out of watching such stories move into reel life? I for 1, want it as close to the story line as possible, they can cut short the story due to the limited of episode but doing a totally different story with the same name is making a fake LV bag and selling it to people saying it’s a real LV bag.

The production knows that this is a popular web novel, they are just jumping on the hype and making use of it to gain watchers to show case their rubbish.

To me if I can rate this drama as a negative infinity I would.

I now fear for Do Po Cang Qiong, or battle through the heavens(English name)
