Great article!

She’s one of my fave thai actresses but I haven’t been enjoying the dramas she’s been in recently. She’s always paired up with nadech. It’s like, they want to limit her to only him and I don’t understand why- they’re already dating irl so it gets really tiring. And when she finally gets paired with another actor, they choose the one’s she has no chemistry with, or she’s put in a lakorn with an uninteresting plot w/ hardly any romance :/ I much prefer her old dramas like duang jai akanee or even game rai. The last drama I liked of hers was kluen cheewit (although it may be too melodramatic for a lot of people, her acting was pretty good there); if she’s good in romantic melos, why not pair her with different actors with plots like kluen cheewit? It’s what she does best anyway.

Does Black get any better? I finished the 2nd episode but I found it boring. I am looking for a drama as exciting as Signal and this came recommended but the reactions are so mixed i don’t know what to make of it :/ It’s like the concept is extremely interesting but the execution is boring as hell :(

I agree with the concept of a Chinese drama. It fits better with the GOT world. A lot of them also have these…
I agree, Yang Mi is too old for the part of Dany now- too bad, 10 years ago she would have been perfect. But Cersei and Jaime are twins- I think the actress playing her should look a bit similar to Gao Vengo ( I think he would make a good jaime too). Maybe they should get someone like Dilireba or Crystal Liu for dany lol. Dany is described as really beautiful but short in the books lol.

I like the idea... but I think it makes more sense for GoT to have a Chinese version because they really like their fantasy and they seem to be good in portraying fantasy worlds (like in Eternal Love, etc). I think Yang Mi would make an excellent asian version of Daenerys. She can do both weak (susu) and strong (bai qian) which is perfect for the dragon queen.

“It's interesting to see that most drama fans feel attracted towards obsessive male leads but tend to be annoyed by the obsessive second female lead.”

There’s a difference between devotion and obsession. I think most fans want the former but when they are looking for that kind of drama they end up watching the latter as well. That’s why MLs like the one from Eternal Love are very popular...but the ones like ‘Le Jun Kai’ are hated. Although, to be fair, it can be fascinating to watch crappy characters once in awhile- it’s like watching a train wreck. I felt that way when I was watching Le Jun Kai- I hated the ML but couldn’t stop watching.

In Bubble’s Summer, I think the ML was a bit obsessive...but he wasn’t abusive to the FL (one of those rare instances) and I actually liked the drama.

“Funny that there are almost no obsessive female leads in dramaland, isn't it?”

It depends on who is doing the writing and who the target audience is.

In anime geared towards fanboys it’s the opposite. A lot of female characters are very obsessive towards the main male character. They are called ‘yanderes’ and are quite popular with fanboys. ‘Yanderes’ are just like this Chaya but worse- and this is treated as something cute and flattering. There’s even a Yandere simulator- a game where you can create this crazily jealous female character who kills anyone who gets in her way of the male lead

Even in the most popular classic anime without yanderes, you will find a lot of harem scenarios (ah my goddess, tenchi muyo, ranma 1/2) where several jealous obsessive females fight over the ordinary male main lead.

All of these are written by men and they are watched by fanboys. Very popular in Japan and in the anime fandom.

In the superhero genre, i have seen a comic where catwoman forces herself on batman despite his saying no plenty of times. I have also seen a highly rated cartoon where harley quinn forces herself on another male character.

In the BL (boy love) genre it is the same...except the male lead is attracted to another male lead. If you look into ‘obsessive’ male leads in anime/manga- you will see that most of them are from the boy love genre.

I think we can safely say that you can find this sort of thing everywhere, in other areas asides from drama land, and that even male fans have a sub genre like it.

I have no idea why Thai dramas have so much rape and force kiss scenes in their dramas. Makes me wonder if thai…
I am sure thai romance watchers aren’t any different from those who watch korean or chinese dramas- i notice that a lot of asian romance viewers (doesn’t matter what race you are) tend to like intensity and devoted male leads...it’s just that in the context of a lot of thai makjang (there are exceptions of course) it’s not done ‘right’ lol i think the male lead from eternal love, the one from
Healer are good examples. For thai drama, I think the lead from leh ratree and duang jai akanee were good.

Those are the exact types of lakorns I can't watch. Any type of force as long as it's not consensual is an absolute…
A safe bet would be to avoid the thai melodramas and just go for their romcoms. In my case, I prefer thai melos but I don’t like watching iabusive behavior either. It makes looking for something i like pretty challenging.
Brownie Feb 28, 2019
I find thai rom coms corny to be honest, and I find myself unable to appreciate the sense of humor when I try to watch them. IMHO I think thai lakorns do best when it comes to melodrama/makjang. The only thing is that there are a lot of terrible melodramas...and a handful of good ones (like Leh Ratree or Kluen Cheewit); you have to really look hard for the good ones because a lot of them have unforgivable characters and extremely stupid situations. I think there’s this challenge writers have to create these intense characters and scenes...but they have to do it in such a way that the main leads aren’t too stupid and you can still like them. When they get it right, it makes a good lakorn.

Looks a bit too "plastic surgery face" to me.
Well yeah, she’s not naturally beautiful ( i think she had her jaw shaved, and maybe her nose and eyes done) but she’s a good actress and she’s not pretending that she’s natural or anything. I mean, from what i know she’s honest about it when asked. Also, I wouldn’t be surprised if most of her male co stars have also gone under the knife but they don’t get criticized so much.

Min Joon Koooookkkk for creepiest (what is with that guy?) and Ahn Do Hoon for most hateful (I was really happy in that scene where he kept slapping his face I was like yes! Slap yourself harder!) XD
