As someone who has read the novel, I can say, Wan Peng and LYR are not support casts. They have very special roles/participation. Their back story is crucial to the drama. Wan Peng is Shangen’s aunt, while LYR is playing 2 roles, Yiran’s dad and uncle (they’re twins).

I follow this on Douban myself, most of the ratings are from day 1 of airing this drama, from fans of DC, they are unhappy about the cast change and the overall revamped look of the drama. If you are going to watch it, keep in mind this is a LA of the donghua and not some continuation of another drama. Otherwise there are other dramas that you can watch.
