Well crap. I'm all caught up with this one before realizing how into it I've gotten. I'm a little surprised at how much I'm enjoying it since I haven't touched a Taiwanese drama series in a while; they're usually not my go-to for drama viewing unless I'm wanting something light, breezy and silly. But I couldn't resist Aaron Yan. And now I'm cursing at myself for watching through the episodes so quickly because they were quite enjoyable and fun and different enough to catch my attention and now I have to wait one week for each new episode...
I love Rain, but I still cannot get through 'Full House'- it's on my "Hold" list. I try to go back and…
Thank goodness I'm not the only one. Everywhere I go people are singing praises for Full House, and I'm sitting here feeling bad that I couldn't get through it. I couldn't even judge acting and story progression fairly because I just COULDN'T get into the series and was wondering if I was just missing something somewhere. I keep it on my Plan to Watch list so that I can start over and give it a good chance, but I just haven't been able to do it.
This is a pretty short list of idol-turned-actors, but I'm glad people at least acknowledge that an idol-turned-actor…
Rainie Yang is one of my favorite TW actresses (I've seen 4 of her series), though while she's pretty good, she's also got a streak for landing the same type of character all the time, except for in ToGetHer, but I didn't particularly like that series much. I used to think she was totally awesome, but the more I think about it, the more I think she fits right into the Meh category. And let's see... Yonghwa... I love his music more than I love his pretty more than I love(?) his acting. He's not cringe-worthy, but he's not very emotive either, but then again, maybe he needs something different.
This is a pretty short list of idol-turned-actors, but I'm glad people at least acknowledge that an idol-turned-actor doesn't always mean bad things. I'm familiar (acting-wise) with all of these stars except for Matsumoto Jun, Eric Mun, Sulli, and Rain (I've never seen any of their series). I'm no expert on good acting, since sometimes my fangirl-dar goes into over-bias, but there are a lot whom I super adore and some whom I just cringe at because, as much as I love them, acting is not their thing.
Of the ones on this particular list... I do agree with Ariel Lin as special mention (she's pretty awesome on the acting front). Then there's Siwon whom I don't particular like nor hate because while he's not outstanding, he's not awkward either. Agree with Suzy being in the Meh since she's got moments, then she's got flatlines, but she's totally charming for some reason.
Is Ariel Lin technically an idol if she started her career with acting?
I may be wrong so someone can correct me if necessary. But as much Taiwanese drama and non-drama (variety and talk shows) that I've watched during my short obsession with TW entertainment, it seemed as if many of the more popular celebs were always referred to as idols, whether actor, singer, or group members or models. Taiwan's entertainment industry and drama series seem to be built on idol power (which could be why I've always found TW drama a little monotonously formulaic, at least what I've seen so far). Don't get me wrong, I still like watching a good TW drama every so often and I DO agree that Ariel Lin is an excellent actress (she's the person who managed to get me through ISWAK without going insane), but that's always been the impression I've gotten from TW drama series. The celebrities are good-looking and dabble in every part of entertainment with legions of fans.
Thanks for the interesting article, BTW.
