Its due to the plot revolving around a poorly constructed miscommunication trope. LY is slaughtering civilians…
Yeah, I agree with this, too. LY villainess is not well explained, why to such extreme? I know it is about FZ, but why FZ can cause such effect to his disciple? We see nothing but their everyday interaction in the flashback (joking, eating together, talking). Nothing strong and fundamental that can move character's psychology.
For TLC, it seems better, because FZ changed him. But, how is the process? Just teaching a line "man is born good" repeatedly, showing a scene FZ teaching little children, teaching TLC writing, is not enough. We should see FZ effect to the world for him to such important and beloved character, deserved of devotion. His potrayal is not charismatic enough.
Everything about this drama is excellent, from the beautiful cinematography to the costumes and acting. However,…
IMO, their approach to tell the story is not effective. For me, the director starts with details and plot too early, while failed to deliver the theme, premise, and background of the story, and failed to introduce the main character from the beginning.
We may compare this drama to Mysterious Lotus Casebook (MLC). In episode 1, we see the fight between MC and his rival, and it becomes the prelude of the story as well as the turning point of many characters and their world. Will MC achieve his purpose to know the truth despite of weakened body and enemies everywhere?
I wish this drama using the same approach to tell WOF: to start the story with the fight between TLC and LY. And then, continue the story from TLC side to state his purpose and show us his personality, and where the story will head (to save an important person), not from LY and AShei (the plot).
Compare this to the scene of Li Lianhua after the fight as inciting incident, he and the monk as reflection and purpose statement, and the reason behind his changing personality through flashback in early episodes.
They should show how TLC is saved, meets Chi Yun, decide to take care a baby, and reside in the temple first, and why of all those decision, before introducing the villains and their eccentric behavior.
Basically, this drama has interesting story. However, their method to deliver the story is more telling than showing. Past events, recalling of people, description of characters are mainly through dialogues. For example, "Fang Zhou is a honorable character throughout the jianghu", Yique Yinyang's massacre and brutality, or the battle in Tiandu Peak, they are repeatedly told those to audience, but we never SEE them with our eyes to get the impression ourselves.
Other thing is, until now, we never know the complete story of TLC. I wonder, where does he get his abundant wealth? How can he become a part of imperial circle and an influential figure? How can he become that powerful other than that he is an alien? And, so many questions unanswered: How does the magic work in this world? Why do some people fight with just sword, while other can fly and do magical techniques? How is their training and skill leveling?
And, the worldbuilding, the location of places... we got no sense of direction, distance, and effort. Suddenly people already arrive in this and that place, without preparation and without dust in their clothes. Are they walking on their feet, or flying, or riding horses, or using carriage, or teleporting?
And, the people life is also not showed properly before, during, and after Yique Yinyang, in fact this is the only stake we have, the reason why the fight and sacrifice must be taken. I want to understand the hardship, the trauma, the relief, also the reason behind our heroes are the heroes, and villains are the villains, other than some psychological problems and obsessions.
