It was when the afterthoughts settled that I found it easier to connect the dots. I get reminded of MZJ's opinion on the ending, where he pointed out that republican times had been rough and war-filled, full of crimes and gunshots. The likeliness of people to live is lower, and bluntly said, they die at some point. Just as in the script. It makes sense. But definitely doesn't change that the ending is tragic and it's still alot to take in. The pain fades with a re-watch. Trust me, I'm an avid 'alright letting it run once more before sleep takes me away/my phone punches me in the face'-watcher lol! Also yes! Because I've seen what I've seen and it more feels like I'm trying to trick myself into thinking it didn't happen. Though, in this case, I would have wholeheartedly wished for a happy ending. Jiang Yuelou might be one of the most pitiful characters I've encountered in a long while. Though with every time I rewatch I get reminded of how much I enjoy this show nonethless. Not spoiling too much (however much you get spoiled, there's is still so much you only discover when you eventually watch it, so it's still worth it! :) ) but I especially love how you only in the end really realize that Jiang Yuelou has been the unspoken center of the story. This gives the dynamic between the main trio a certain twist and their encounter a whole new point of view. It's a beautiful story the more I think about it and the journey starts the moment they step into his life and choose to stay regardless of what would happen. I do appreciate the writers effort. It's also nice to see that she is still connected to her own work by heart.
Though I'm not particularly disappointed with WB's ending and it indeed upheld the overall vibe, I remember that it left me feeling a little empty inside, as I most likely also was a little sad about the show coming to an end...

Yes I quickly noticed that republican era doesn't attract as big of an audience as wuxia does and I can definitely see why. I also enjoy a good wuxia show.
I've seen all of woh and I loved it. If not for K&H, woh would definitely have been my obsession. I was thoroughly convinced by the acting. Thankyou for the moments, some of them even seem very familiar :3 It seems to be more the fact that my mind is currently circulating around K&H that keeps me from getting myself 'more' invested. (I personally can only really get into one show at a time and I'm already lurking around the woh-discord-server).

I'd always been thinking people would rather be interested in republican than wuxia tbh. Must've been because I myself am more of a republican fanatic and the same goes for a few around me. They appreciate that it's closer in timeline and also, as much as these were violent times, fashion back then was classyyy.

Yep, that's what chinese drama can be for you, and while you mentioned it being your first, I feel like you fell right into a pot full of everything it comes with. As for the dubbing- it's a c-drama thing you get used to. Once you do, it's not half as bad, but I see what you mean here. Chinese dramas usually get dubbed for various reasons- one of them being mainland chinese pronounciation. You guessed correctly, including the sound effects, it was all newly recorded in a studio and lines are spoken by voice actors. :)

my guess is yes, as the sad ending was very unexpected. Everything else gets wrapped up neatly prior. I know some people are all in for bad endings, but I do agree with you, I can't really tell why people would enjoy the extra tragedy. Especially in this case, it's very, very tragic.
Important to the story- not so much. I would say the deleted clips could be deemed important for the overall vibe. Most of the scenes have been cut due to censorship issues, as they make the relationship between the leads clearer. The chemistry between the leads is very palpable even without the special cuts and I dare to say it doesn't make it uh... less romantic. But the cuts probably just crossed the border. They're like treats, but not exactly necessary for the overall plot :)
If you're still hesitating to start I say yes! Overall it is a fantastic piece- you get impressive acting, beautifully drawn soundtrack, wonderful sets, strong characters and gorgeous attire. I have quickly gotten really attached.

The scriptwriter had finished the script around 2018-2019. Shooting also had been wrapped up in 2019.Back then, the scriptwriter had decided on an unexpected twist. However now that it had finally been aired, alot of fans have expressed their disappointment, as it could've easily been a happy end if not for the last few minutes. As the scriptwriter herself followed the episodes while they were airing, she felt the pain, too. Via social network she already apologized and told fans that if she could, she would go back and rewrite the ending. However due to all the censorship and major difficulities they had undergone to be able to finally air the drama, they unfortunately can't re-edit the ending, much less re-film anything. So they went and used the footage they had to change the ending and upload it seperately :)
