Yes, I find True Beauty to be really shallow. Its as if the comic is casting the characters insecurities onto us and making us just as shallow as the characters.

Yeah theres gonna be a group similar to Ocean's 11 later on (but that hasn't happened yet. I'll update you when it does), but its less full of action and cool conning scenes and rather about the hidden meaning behind words and the lies that everyone says to each other. Its more like that movie... what was it called? Ugh, forgot. That hollywood movie where two spies (working for opposing agencies) marry each other while hiding their identity from their spouse.

TRUE BEAUTY THE WEBTOON:
Back when I was a highschooler, I remembered coming home from a long day of stress and just collapsing onto my bed to read the updated comics. One of the popular ones was "True Beauty". I'm going to very honest. The only genre of comics that I read is isekai, so True Beauty had nothing that would draw me in besides the beautiful art. I read it for very shallow reasons.
The premise is a girl feels that she is ugly, and she wears makeup which makes her beautiful. No one (besides her family) knows what she truly looks like. One day, she bumps into the ML, a naturally handsome person who fals for her despite finding out the truth. The sML is also a naturally handsome person and seems to have some traumatic history with the ML. Both the ML and sML grow to accept the FL's natural face and then... *we don't know yet, the story isn't done*.
I had a few issues with this story.
1. Its very cliche. "ugly", "quirky" (she likes horror) girl. "Hot" guys with a traumatic past. Idols, jealous fangirls, etc.. Its just so... so unatural how the whole plot is only filled with those? I really don't see a story if that makes sense. Just a bunch of plot devices smashed together so two hot guys can fight over a girl.

2. The message. I get that its trying to convey that she is beautiful with or without makeup. But, we're 200 episodes into the comic. Shes still very insecure about her looks. She has helped other "ugly" people by teaching them how to do makeup. The main leads are all perfect. Is this really what you want to send to young readers? By calling the comic "True Beauty" you are telling people to learn what the meaning of "beauty" is . However, its been 200 episodes and you've only shown perfect people and people hiding what they look like under tons of makeup?
I have nothing against makeup, but, I find it very toxic to expose such young audiences (they're like 11-12...) to a message like that, especially in todays society.

3. The romance. The ML falls in love with the FL, his dad dies and he goes to Japan then... ghosts her? The FL forgets about her feelings for the ML and dates the sML. ML comes back and wishes the FL is happy with the sML while continuing to hit on her?
I... I hate love triangles okay? Just think about it, imagine you are the FL. What do you do in a situation like this?? Its so mindblowingly anguishing to be in a situation like this and I cannot express how much I hate seeing love triangles where both the ML's are so competitive.

Overall, I'm 100% not hating on this. I can totally see the appeal to poeple but I feel as if the story has many imperfections. I am very sure that if the art was not as good as it was, it wouldn't be as popular as it is now. I only read it because of the art and after talking to my friends, some of them only read it because of the art. Others were drawn to it because of the cliche student romance plot.



TRUE BEAUTY THE DRAMA:
Okay, so this is obv gonna be an adaptation, so same plot! Well my problem with it is the casting. The FL is so conventionally pretty. Like Moon Ga Young is prolly not gonna be someone you would call "ugly", some people might not find her attractive but in general, she is.
Looking at the trailer, you see her with HORRIBLY done makeup to make her look unattractive. The makeup 100% fails to make her unattractive. It just looks like she got a horrible sunburn and tried to cover it with horrible foundation.
I really don't like stories that have "ugly" characters in the first place because I feel like that is such a sensative topic. I enjoyed My ID is Gangnam Beauty because they never showed the "ugly" FL because no one is truley "ugly", they are just deemed as "ugly" by society. However, by casting such a good looking person and putting them in such horrible makeup, it seems as if they are making a parady or laughing at those with actual tan skin or rosy cheeks. At the same time, if they cast a conventionally unattractive person, they are also telling people "this person is ugly, if you look like this, you are ugly".
Because of just how sensative everything is, I really would've just preferred if they didn't make the drama. And after watching the trailer, I'm a bit cringed out LOL. I really wasn't expecting... *that* from the trailer.





PS:
And all of these observations are talking about one issue. There are a lot of other issues with the story like just how triggering it is. It has bullying, suicide... just everything in it and its all there so that there can be romance.
I don't hate the story, but I don't enjoy it either.
I don't know why I wrote it but I've just become so tired... tired of things like this in drama. I know I can never avoid heavy topics in dramas, but I just wish they were done in a more sensitive and researched manner.
I know people put passion, love, care into the webtoon and this drama. But to me, it feels so cheap, like it was created just to siphen off the popularity of the webtoon and that doesn't sit well with me. When I look at other peoples thoughts on it, all I see are people loving the art, loving the author for being pretty, or loving that Cha Eun Woo is in it. I know I'm being overcritical but I just...
MY FEELINGS ARE OVERFLOWING FROM THIS LOL, IT WAS THE LAST STRAW FOR ME, SORRY FOR THE RANT.


I'm still gonna watch the drama tho LOL I'm very curious as to where it is going to go.
