I love BOY from the beginning. today is my 3rd time trying to watch this series.
it's funny you say that because I did the opposite and watched Blood Of Youth second and it took me like 10 episodes to get into it π I think there's this expectation for both shows to be similar but they're not at all. I see a lot of MLC viewers struggling with BOY and vice versa. I think either way the transition from one show to the other is hard π
I'm just over half way and I'm both surprised by A) how little Wuxins character has actually been in the series so far considering the actor is listed second, and how prominent he is on the promotional material. and B) how much Tang Lian IS in this considering he listed last in Main Cast AND he's on 0 posters and thumbnails??? Neither of these facts bother me I'm just stumped by them. I really didn't pay much attention to any Tang Lian scenes in the first few episodes because I figured he'd disappear and now I've seen more of him than the second male lead hahaha
Its from the start for most of us. Some find its from ep 6-7 when dfs joins the trio. Try it until at least 10eps…
while I didn't mind the beginning, I wasn't super hooked and was alternating watching this with a different show,, after episode 10 I found myself getting way more invested in the plot and characters
i started watching this show on a whim and I'm pleasantly surprised by the amount of trope subversion they did. It's been a while since I watched a BL that had me guessing wrong so much!
**spoilers** I thought Tai would keep that he was Phats soulmate a secret for at least half the show and they sorted that out way earlier. I expected Nara to be a crazy ex and she wasn't. I assumed Thian to be the voice Lom heard when he lost his hearing and he DEFINITELY wasn't π . **end spoilers**
Tai's way of handling the Lom/Phat situation near the end really bothered me and felt out of character but they did a really great job of then fleshing out the mums character, and drawing parallels of how Tai, without realising it was more alike her than he thought.
This was by far the best family dynamics I've seen shown in a BL so far, every member felt like they had a presence even if some didn't have a lot of screen time.
and I actually really loved the end scene. I know a lot of people are mad, but I think it's the perfect way to drive home the entire point of this show, it was very clever.
Definitely deserves a higher rating!! but I don't put much stock in MDL rating anymore anyway
One episode and I'm ready to drop it lmao. Hira with his weird obsessive behavior and Kiyoi's aggressive and abusive…
Opinions on Kiyoi's behaviour aside...I think with Hira, it's clear he has an atypical personality and approach to valuing things, and he is very likely on the spectrum in some way. He's never cared or held value for anything before Kiyoi, and the focus of this season seems like it will mostly be him learning to value himself as well. If Hira's hyperfixation on Kiyoi just comes across as "weird and obsessive behaviour" and you don't like it then dropping the show is probably for the best, he's extremely unlikely to change in that aspect ππΌ
I'm not sure how I felt about the first episode... it feels like Hira is changing but Kiyoi isn't at the moment.…
I'm really surprised to read a comment like this because I actually thought the opposite π π
Kiyoi gives Hira way more time to talk now, he's actively trying to boost Hira's confidence and show him how handsome he is, he's physically more affectionate than season 1 and towards the ends of the EP Kiyoi recognizes and admits that he went a little crazy the day before.
Kiyoi and Hira have very different ways of expressing themselves which aren't totally compatible, while I see Kiyoi is attempting to communicate better this season, Hira isn't and I think that ultimately also comes from his low self worth, he doesn't think his feelings have value or are worth explaining.
Thank you for saving me :20 minutes by saying exactly what I was going to reply about this. π₯°This is one of…
This was the first time I'd come back to the comments since finishing the show months ago and I was surprised by the amount of negative takes here (I really shouldn't be, it is MDL after all). Sad to hear it's a reoccurring issue. I'll be sure to come back in six months to post my comment again if it's burried under negative rhetoric again ππΌ
It's definitely all subjective! Sadly some people on the internet just think it's fun to stir conflict, and unfortunately their response to the comments here express alot more about them than their original opinion of the show :/ There's no meaningful conversation to have here so I wouldn't bother responding to them anymore. Sorry to have restarted the discourse in your comment thread!! β€οΈ
I'm not triggered that you "called me on my effusive praise of this show" haha, I'm annoyed to see your incessant comments against others who have differing opinions. Are you bored?
Will your next comment quote that back to me, mocking me for being annoyed and saying "are you bored" isn't an original question? Your responses are all the same, purposely annoying people in the comments then saying they're cliche or absurd for acting like you're angry. Perhaps you're not angry or "triggered" over this but you certainly enjoy an argument, that's why you always come back here right?
"Every comment you've made is full of assumptions" that's true, you've also done the same. My "effusive praise of this show"? I've actually never stated my opinion of My Only 12% on MDL, you've just assumed I love it based on my response to you starting arguments. it's funny how the internet is like that. Should I have assumed you loved the show instead from your original comment? My mistake, I'll wait for you to be more direct before calling you out on your behaviour next time.
"You might have noticed the many comments below trashing this show also" That's a great point! I have noticed. I've also been on MDL long enough to notice that negative comments ALWAY outweigh positive comments. Even underneath media that is extremely popular. Because for some reason people who don't like things really want other to know how shit they think something is haha. The comments might be terrible, but they don't hold any more weight than the rating created from averaging people's opinions. 8.1 is good rating, not incredible, but not shit either. So obviously a vast majority of people enjoy this show, and don't feel compelled to comment on it.
Feel free to respond to my bs with more of your own. In general I'm not a fan of getting into online discourse because people who don't respect others aren't worth 'arguing' with, so I won't be putting any more of my energy into talking to you, I have better things to do. I hope someday you find some media that encourages you to post positive comments instead, all the best x
A lot of comments here criticising Eiw for being a "weak cry baby uke", and wanting stronger more masculine leads in their shows. The thing is: there's absolutely nothing wrong with being a gentle, emotional person. Queer or otherwise. (I can't believe I'm having to write this comment in 2023 ffs)
There's also absolutely nothing in this show that categorises Earth's character as being 'the bottom'. We don't see any scenes which infer their positions in that way, and sexual preferences are alot more complex than two categories of 'top' and bottom'. There's absolutely no reason Cake couldn't be a 'bottom' and Eiw a 'top'. Or both of them vers. Or ANYTHING ELSE. If you're assuming that Eiw is the uke based on the traits of his character than you should rethink how you're viewing this media. If he wasn't 'soft' and 'weak' would you have even categorised him as the Uke to begin with? Also: "Eiw cries too much in the show!"? If you exclude the last two episodes where the crying is a result of family trauma and look at the rest of the episodes: Cake cries just as much!! No one in the comments are complaining about him! Because he's perceived as the 'Seme' and it's a positive thing for him to be emotional? Interesting double standard there.
Secondly, for the comments uncomfortable with characters being portrayed with these 'out dated stereotypes': Earth IS an effeminate, out gay man, playing a character who grows through this show to BECOME an effeminate (semi)out gay man. He is one of the only proudly out actors in the industry right now, playing a character who is very similar to himself in a lot of ways. Tearing Eiw's character down for not presenting as masc is an insult to Earth, and an insult to the LGBTQ+ audience watching and seeing themselves in this character too.
I completely understand if you can't deal with all the crying scenes in general, it's a drama series and that's a matter of different taste or enjoyment in genres. But if it's not that, and it's just dislike for the 'weak cry baby uke' 'trope', then take note that by criticising the portrayal of queer men who are effeminate and emotional, you're not really making the inclusive and pro queer-diversity statement you think you're making.
You think that was a sad comment, but seeing you triggered in the comments by anyone enjoying this series is the real tragedy to witness here.
Sorry to say, no matter how many troll comments you leave on others positive feedback, it's not going to change their opinion on the show, or make your criticism any more valid.
if you're reading comments here to decide whether or not to watch this show, my advice is to just give it a go. I nearly didn't watch it based on the comments but after viewing it, a lot of the stuff other people have pointed out don't bother me at all. I'm more focused on the characters and how they react in the situation they're given. This is the first BL I've watched in a while where I really can't predict or see at all where it's going or what will happen next which is refreshing. The MC is quite morally ambiguous and the stakes are both so high (because they're fighting for their lives) and so low (because the end of the world means nothing they do really matters anyway, right?) that I'm just along for the ride.
I like the darker vibe, I like the characters chemistry (and for those annoyed with the lack of kiss so far, the director has clearly shown with the explicit scene from the side couple in episode THREE that he's not afraid to show intimacy, he's choosing to withhold it so far for a reason.)
With that said, someone who isn't me might hate all of this, so I'd recommend giving at least the first two episodes a try.
(This is the first comment I've left on MDL, because it's the second show in a row that I've loved, but almost didn't try based on complaints in the comments)
