Showing (not telling) the constant restlessness of wanting
What I like most is how the show does this really clever thing to tell the story without explicitly having its characters verbalise anything.
Whenever a character is using someone to make someone else jealous, their eyes don’t lie. You can always tell who is interested in whom by tracking their gaze.
There aren’t that many BLs which explore the toxic side of what it’s like to be so desperate for attention. There’s Only Friends and I Told Sunset About You, with the latter expressing a restless teenage anxiety. And yet, I Told Sunset About You is nowhere as manipulative and toxic, though (which is why Gelboys is so awesome – because this is exactly what happens in real life).
The entire series is filled with ambiguous (sometimes slightly truncated) dialogue, teenage tension, and long scenes peppered with brief moments that are significant only when understood in context.
Gelboys excels at showing and not telling.
Extra bonus points for 10/10 visuals and music.
