What I like about danmei in particular is that two folks are on similar grounds. They respect/know each other, fight/plan/work shoulder to shoulder. There is more value in the soul connection and loyalty.
I have encountered annoying/cuestionable protagonists in the danmei, but they have had dimensions and development. They didn't remain cartoonish and I was able to read with pleasure how they mature and transform into more dignified beings.
In hetero-sexual romances (from China in particular – I have read more than 400 novels), female characters are rarely written decently. LOL. It's sad. I may need to explore more but I have already been disappointed.🥲
